Beavers" <rbeavers@llion.org> To: emfguru@hotmail.com -------------------------------------------------- Hi everybody: Here is another message which was "copied" to me, but I think it contains some good info for everyone -- particularly those having an interest in melanoma, fluorescent lights or chinchilla!!! Dr. John Evans (author of the message below) recently won a landmark case in Canada concerning the role of EMF in causing or promoting melanoma. (As this event was a part of our earlier EMF-L list, many of you who are now with us ... will not have been aware of that.) Cheerio...... You may be interested to know that at the beginning of 1998 I began to compile a list of Dr. Ott's publications (and I began to assemble copies of them, too). I wanted to review what he had done, and how he had communicated it to the rest of the world, including the scientific community. The task is not yet complete, and will probably take most of the rest of the year, since I am doing it in bits and pieces. >.This is part of a larger effort of mine that is focussed on fluorescent lighting. I had begun to wonder just how much evidence there is of the unhealthfulness of the fluorescent lights we put into so many of our buildings (libraries, schools, courthouses, government buildings, office buildings, etc.) and I decided to search the literature to find out. The result is quite illuminating! It seems that there have been health complaints reported ever since fluorescent lights came on the scene! >.In my mind, the question now is whether fluorescent lighting can be made safe, or not. If it CAN be made safe, the work of Dr. Ott would seem to be telling us how to do it. >.This is of particular importance here in the USA because our Congress passed energy-saving legislation in the early 1900s that requires the use of energy-efficient fluorescent lighting in buildings! If we cannot make fluorescent lighting safe and healthful, we in the USA will be in violation of federal law if we try to protect our health by using some other type of building lighting! -- Marjorie > > Dear Marjorie, Thanks for your message. It is good to know that others are becoming interested in the effects of various colors (visible electromagnetic frequencies) on living things. I agree that we must be extremely wary of fluorescent lights. However, John Ott feels that if we use full-spectrum, cathode-shielded fluorescents we should not be adversely affected. I sent off a message to Sam Milham which you may find of interest. Much of what I say has already been discussed on EMFguru's forum, but I feel some of it bears repeating. You may be especially interested in reading the article I cite that appeared in THE LANCET about fluorescent lights and malignant melanoma. Ask your librarian to get a copy for you. Anyway, here is what I sent to Sam on April 22nd: ****************Copy of my e-mail to Sam Milham*********** Dear Sam Milham, Further to the comments I posted yesterday to Roy Beavers for distribution on his list, here are a few more ideas passed on to you directly. As indicated yesterday, I feel that malignant melanoma cases may be more prevalent under certain fluorescent lights than under sunlight because of the distorted spectrum that is emitted by the lights. It is my opinion that certain high intensity "spikes" of energy from fluorescent tubes can affect the pineal gland, inhibiting the production of melatonin. We all know that EMFs can markedly reduce the effectiveness of melatonin (and tamoxifen) in the body, thus allowing for the enhancement of tumor growth -- both of the above substances being known as tumor growth inhibitors. I agree that various human-produced EMFs (along with the visible and near visible spectrum of natural, unfiltered sunlight) probably work synergistically to confound the body, upsetting the immune system, thus allowing for tumor growth. This, I believe, is more evident in persons who are naturally prone to developing malignant melanoma; i.e., those with light skin and blue eyes. You are probably aware of the study "MALIGNANT MELANOMA AND EXPOSURE TO FLUORESCENT LIGHTING AT WORK" which appeared in THE LANCET, August 7, 1982, pp 290 - 293. I do not see that the experimenters classified just what types of fluorescent lights were the culprits. Their studies seem to concentrate on the amount of UV rays which are emitted, not >WHICH< UV rays, the near UV wavelengths or the far UV wavelengths. John Ott, a bank employee turned time-lapse photographer, found that various colors of light he used in his experiments caused all kinds of anomalies in the plants and animals under study. His standard of ordinary light was the natural spectrum as emitted by the sun. He has shown in actual experiments with school children that by replacing ordinary fluorescent lights with full-spectrum, cathode shielded ones, that the behavior and attention span of the children vastly improved. He feels that living organisms NEED near ultraviolet light, and the full-spectrum flourescents include that part of the spectrum. In some lighting fixtures he even installs a small "black light" tubes to make sure there is enough of the near UV light present. When it was fashionable to raise chinchillas for fur, expecting a big return on one's investment, my brother, George, got caught up in the craze. With the financial help of a group of entrepreneurial doctors, he built a special shed for the animals, lighting it with ordinary fluorescent lights. After moving the animals into the new quarters, almost no new females were born. The pups were almost all male. The business went down the drain! John Ott tells of similar experiences with chinchilla breeders across the continent, until they started to use full-spectrum lights. It is most interesting to read of the amazing things that happen to plants and animals in experiments where Ott uses different solid colors of light. By the way, here is another story that involves chinchillas (and I feel it has something to do with electromagnetic energy in general). When my brother first started breeding the animals, he found it very difficult to predict accurately just when new pups were expected. The chinchillas are so furry it is impossible to follow the pregnancy just by observing the changing size of the expectant mother. The best way, he found, was to keep weighing them, and he could predict within a few days when the pups should arrive. One of the reasons for knowing just when the birth is to happen is so that one can be present and take the little ones away from the mother and put them in a "safe haven" in her cage where the mother can see them, smell them, etc. The reason for this is that some animals bred in captivity tend to kill their own offspring. However, after a brief "getting acquainted" time takes place with the pups in a safe place, the mother readily accepts the new little ones and starts nursing them. This means several days of sitting up with the expectant mother, 24 hours a day, until the pups arrive. (Breeding stock is so expensive that one does not want to lose any potential new stock.) When George told me about this, I asked him whether he kept a log of arrival times. Yes, he said. We went back over his log and found that in every case the births took place during what John Alden Knight, in his "Solunar Tables," calls an "influence period." Knight was interested in the effects of the pull of the sun and the moon in relation to tidal changes, and also as to how those two heavenly bodies affect living creatures. I used to consult his Solunar Tables for the best fishing and hunting times, as interpolated for the area where we lived at that time. I found the tables very accurate in predicting feeding and movement times of various species. [ I now have a program on my computer called "LunaTick: A Fish and Game Activity Forecaster," which does the forecasting for me. It is available from AMTECH Inc, 141 Sam Smith Circle, Crawfordville, FL 32327 -- Phone: 904-421-4196; E-mail: amtech@tallahassee.net.] When George, my brother, started using the Solunar Tables, he was able to use the weighing technique along with the tables to predict the actual birth times within an hour or two. That way, he was able to sleep during the "no activity" periods and sit up only through the "activity periods." It worked, every time. If anyone doubts how powerful the pull of the sun and moon is, they need only live near the Bay of Fundy as we used to. One can witness the vertical rise and fall of the tide by as much as a three-storey building in six hours. Talk about a natural electromagnetic force ! ! ! And speaking of natural electromagnetic forces, all living creatures on this earth have, over many millennia, become acclimatized to the natural background radiation. It is only in the last 100 years that we have started in earnest to foul that all up. No wonder people are getting sick in larger and larger numbers. Hopefully, with the help of those who see the problems, we'll be able to survive as a species. Thanks for "listening." Sincerely, John ****************End of copied e-mail message**************** It is great that we get so many interesting ideas, concepts, etc., coming up on EMFgurus list.
