Beavers" Subject: Tower Issue in Lansing, MI Hi Roy: This is an update on our situation in Lansing, MI. We took the PTAs into the tower issue because of the concern over putting them at schools. The original proposal was to put 100' towers at 9 elementary schools and 3 high schools. Before the school board, we convinced them to eliminate the elementary schools. Last week, the city held a public hearing before the Planning Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals with 16 new proposed sites -- they moved to the nearest city park or golf course from our schools. (Why don't they ever pick cemeteries?) Both boards questioned the city planner about why there was a public hearing before there was a specific plan and sites and why the towers had changed to 200' plus. We were only given 3 minutes to speak. Most interesting though, a lawyer from one of our local hospitals showed up and testified that 2 proposed locations were too close and would interfer with the telemetry and heart equipment at the hospital. He spoke about cardiology and intensive care. It was wonderful! So, yesterday my school superintendent called me and said he had been to a meeting of another hospital and talked to them and suggested that we start contacting appropriate medical offices and associations. Of course, we will -- its a great plan. If anyone is interested in putting their two cents into our issue, a letter can be sent to the Planning Board and/or the Board of Zoning Appeals, City of Lansing, 316 N. Capitol, Lansing, Michigan 48933-1236. We have also received a letter from our U.S. Rep Debbie Stabenow, who supports the control of towers and is opposed to putting them at schools, and will be supporting the federal legislation.
