Subject: Frog article

Hi Roy

An article published in our local B.C paper ( vancouver province )
That has the heading "FROGS CRISIS A WARNING TO HUMANS"(By Roy Berry
Staff Reporter) apparently a ecologist and researcher into amphibians by
the name of Linda Dupuis says everyone should be concerned, because
whatever is killing frogs will eventually get to people as well.
"There's an overall trend toward decline in most species",said Dupuis.
"Amphibians are a window into what happens when you disturb the habitat.
Degrading the ecosystem ultimately affects humans.
The problem which has worsened since 1995,has become so urgent thet U.S
President Bill Clinton recently proposed adding $8.1 million U.S next
year to the interior department's Budget for studying amphibian decline
a huge addition to the $1 million U.S now allocted.
"All amphibian biologists are now convinced that something unusual and
catastrophic is happening to anphibians," said Ron Heyer of the
Smithonian Institution".
Both Dupuis and Heyer said possible factors include the thinning of the
ozone layer, climate change, and the use of pestisides, herbicibes and
other chemicals that cause deformities and interfere with reproduction.
Dupuis said logging had caused habitat loss in the three or four species
she has studiedin B.C over the past eight years.
"The chemicals and habitat loss are the most worrisome",she said "I
woudn't put one over the other".
meanwhile, scientists are asking the public to use the
Web site to report sightings of normal and malformed amphibians
encountered outdoors
