Hi everybody:

..........Guru often receives questions which he feels he is not
qualified to answer...... Such is the case with most of Mark's
questions below..... So, I am passing this out onto the EMF-L
list for the many people we have - who are more qualified (in a
technical sense) - to reply....

However, I do want to make two general observations about Mark's
questions, because in a very real sense - they typify what I
believe are some important "general public" misunderstandings that
need to be emphasized....

(1) The information Mark supplies below suggests to me that he is
being overly reliant upon the "readings" he obtains from whatever
device (gauss-meter??) he may be using.....

.......If I may suggest an analogy: With the instrument that he is
using ... and given the present **limited** state of knowledge we
have about the health effects of electromagnetic radiation (at ALL
frequencies); Mark is much like the man who is looking through a
key-hole into a dimly lit room and trying - not only to see
"everything" that is THERE ... but also - to READ THE BIBLE that is
on the table in the back of the room.....!!

He is not likely to get the full, satisfying answers that he seeks --
is he????

(2) However, Mark makes a good point with (what I perceive to be) his
healthy skepticism about the claims of some of the EMF mitigation
devices he is "trying out." In good conscience, I can only reinforce
that skepticism.....

Here on the EMF-L list, we TRY to be as scientifically sound as we can
(both in describing or diagnosing the problem, and) in recommending any
corrective actions.... Up to this point, the only "corrective action"
that seems to justify a **HIGH** degree of 'scientific' credibility is
** avoidance **....

We say that NOT because we think it is the only remedy ... but because
it seems to warrant the highest scientific "grade" of the various remedies
currently being pushed -- some of which, might be fairly described as, "no
better than snake oil."

Cheerio....

Hi Roy -

I'm Mark Crosby in Venice, CA. And I'd like to reduce EMF exposure at my
home as much as I can.

Would you please comment on:

1. mu-metal shielding (and other methods?) in computer monitors. The
third-party retrofitting that used to be done seems like it might be a big
help.

2. ElectroSheild (esona.com) and
(https://www11.secure-website.net/~esona/affil_ssl.html)

My "take" on their products is that they are lacking third-party testing
and the results seem to be mixed (some volunteers actually had higher
"health risks" with the use of the product indicating, perhaps, induced
stress from the testing).

3. The usefulness of TriField meters such as offered by Real Goods (see
http://www.trifield.com/EMF_meter.htm) . I have one that is supposed to
show readings of:
	a. magnetic 0-3 and 0-100 (milligauss) range
	b. Electric from 0-100 range (kilovolts/meter)
	c. Radio/Microwave from 0.1 to 1 (mW/cm2)

This meter shows that I am regularly exposed to magnetic energy around 15
milligauss from the computer monitors I use. "Electric" is negligible and
microwave also negligible. Where I sleep there are no readings.
Naturally, I stay away from the microwave in the kitchen while it is in use
since that shows levels at even 7 feet away of .3 mW/cm2.

I'd appreciate your opinion about the health risks of those levels, and the
effectiveness of the meter itself. Also, I keep fruits and other foods out
on the counter by the microwave. Any comments on that too?

I also live nearby a 10Kv power line - but fortunately, the meter shows
little magnetic effect except near the larger appliances (fridge) and near
the power box. As I walk up to the power pole the meter starts to show
readings around 2-3 milligauss but nearer the house and where I sleep the
levels are mostly low. Television shows readings of .5 milligauss where I
sit about 11 feet away.

Thanks very much.
