All it adresses is the aesthetic issue. They need the base stations and they find other ways! In the UK we are now getting 'architecturally correct' panel antennas mounted on walls in historic and heritage areas. These are not at all obvious to the eye unless you really know what to look for. However they are usually at first floor level - about 10 feet only above the heads of people walking along the street. These are now becoming pouplar in city areas and mean that people are MORE exposed to microwave radiation than they would have been from the ugly high towers that might have been used in the past. They also need FAR more of them as each one can only serve one or two streets! The alternative to these are the "lampost" antennas we heard all about last year. All these aesthetically more acceptable 'solutions' end up irradiating the population even more. Sorry to sound so negative, but Roy is right, we need to fight the NEED for any masts/antennas not just specific instances. Encourage everyone you know not to own and use a cell-phone. It is the only way. It is no good using such a device and then being NIMBYish about the masts. You have to have to masts/antennas to support the cell-phone service. Anyone who has a cell-phone and then complains about masts has their head in the sand. People ARE getting more self-conscious about using them. Whereas not long ago, on a train, people would be proud to use one in full view, often now in the UK if one rings everyone looks round to see who "has farted" (so to speak) and the guilty party usually slinks down to the end of the carriage away from everyone else to accept the call! We need to encourage people to feel bad about owning and using their cell-phones. I carry a small microwave alarm I have built and if anyone uses a phone within about 10 feet of me it emits a shrill alarm. When I explain what it is to all seated around me I usually get more support than abuse for my stance. (p.s.: no they are not commercially available yet, sorry!)
