For FYI Cell Phones, Microwaves, and Other Modern Hazards by Melody Milam Potter, PhD (AltM DrMeL) Ever think you might be frying your brain as you gab on your cell phone? Ever wonder, while gazing into the microwave oven, if your organs could be cooking, too? Those questions represent a hot topic in an ongoing international debate among researchers, governments, and health regulatory agencies. The official position among the health agencies is clear -- evidence is accumulating but, so far, there is not enough to sound an alarm. The researchers are saying, “But, wait ...” Some research shows mobile phones are related to fatigue, headaches and tingling sensations. Other results suggest short-term memory loss, confusion, and high blood pressure related to this kind of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Breaks in DNA material in the central nervous system have been observed in rats. There is also evidence EMR can modify the effects of neuro-affective drugs, and that it can reduce the effectiveness of natural substances in our bodies that bind up chemicals, thus preventing cancer. People who work with ELF fields get more breast cancer, whether they are male or female. Children who develop leukemia are more likely to live near high voltage electric lines. Adults who are exposed to microwaves at work tend to have much higher risk of brain cancer. Authorities say, however, that some of this research is flawed; some uses abnormally high levels of EMR, and much has not been replicated. In short, not enough research has been done to date. Even so, US guidelines for electromagnetic emissions are the most stringent in the world. For cell phones, regulations in some other countries can be up to 16 times higher. In the UK, emissions can be up to 3 times higher. We are constantly bombarded with ELF emissions, and no one knows if they are cumulative. Communications equipment, radar, radio and TV transmitters, telephone relay towers, computer screens, and automatic garage door openers all add to our total dose of ELF. It is highly unlikely that ELF has no effect on us, so reducing exposure where we can just makes good sense. Remember: * Stand at least 3 feet away from an operating microwave oven or air conditioner. * Only use your cell phone when a regular phone is not available. * Wear an ear piece microphone or hands-free car kit when using your mobile phone. * Only use the mobile phone outside the car, which requires lower transmission levels. * Limit your use of cell phones to necessity. * Avoid wearing your phone on your body. * Use a phone shield. * Don’t leave your cell phone close to your bed at night. Move it several feet away. * Only use an electric blanket to warm up the bed. Turn it off before retiring. * Don’t place refrigerators, etc., against a wall on which a bed is on the other side. * Stay several feet back from the television, audio systems, and laser printers. Everyone does agree that electromagnetic devices interfere with pacemakers (keep the phone at least 6 inches away), hearing aids, and medical monitoring equipment in hospitals. Individuals carrying their phones on an airplane should have them turned off while on board because of interference with navigational equipment.
