Many years ago Alfred Nobel asked the Karolinska institute to help select a yearly candidate for the NOBEL PRIZE in medicin. One of the many talented people who made the Karolinska Institute what it is today, is professor Olle Johansson at the Experimental Dermatology Unit, Department of Neuroscience. Professor Johansson is very much respected and admired by individuals, groups and associations around the world that FEB has daily contact with. Professor Johansson is often referred to and interviewed due to his in depth knowledge. He was recently interviewed by the BBC and Japanese television. Professor Johansson was one of the first scientists who actually believed the patients who in the early eighties suffered from skin burn after working with computer VDTs. He found perplexing changes in their skin after exposure and has since studied electric sensitivity (ES) against many and great odds. One of his studies, a fairly small one, confirmed that electrically sensitive (ES) individuals reacted with symptoms when exposed to mobile telephones. We have however, during the last decade witnessed the many run-arounds he has encountered. There have been many subtle, and many not so subtle attempts to stop his funding and activities. He has however, "survived", but his research has been severly curtailed and this is a loss for all of us. Professor Johansson has tried not to be intimidated and has throughout remained outspoken, something we all appreciate. We write to you on behalf of all the people in the world who suffer from electromagnetic exposure, especially microwave radiation exposure from mobile phone antennas which has caused many individuals all over the world to leave their homes in order to protect themselves and their children. We, the general public the world over, need scientists who stand FREE and who are not sponsored and paid by mobile telephone operators. Most research in this area is guided and sponsored by such industry. Governments and the general public cannot trust these scientists to be free and objective and to tell the truth. This is evident from the American tobacco scandal where scientists were manipulated in the extreme. We do feel that professor Johansson is a very moral and upright and plain speaking scientist who is not afraid to "tell it the way it is" about electromagnetic radiation. In this he is unique and also much appreciated. And very much needed by the world community. The reason why we write to you at his point in time is that we have sensed that in some levels from your own organization there have been attempts to undermine the position of Olle Johansson. We do not wish to dwell on any details, except that the signals are worrying. We might understand that the electronics industry may not welcome some of his findings and could work to undermine his position, but we would not expect it from your own very esteemed organization. We would therefore like you to personally confirm and guarantee that this is not the case, and that you support the work of Olle Johansson and thus a free and open science. We urgently look forward to hearing from you on this important matter.
