Newspaper says tobacco industry paid scientists
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Reuters) - Once-secret documents indicate
the tobacco industry paid thousands of dollars to scientists to
write letters to publications criticizing a controversial
government report, a newspaper said Tuesday.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press said its review of some of the
documents showed 13 scientists were paid a total of $156,000 to
write letters attacking a 1993 Environmental Protection Agency
study which said secondhand smoke caused lung cancer.
The documents involved were among the millions of pages of
material made public as a result of Minnesota's suit against the
industry. The suit, to recover taxpayer funds spent treating
smoking-related illnesses, was settled in May when tobacco
companies agreed to pay $6.6 billion to the state and its
co-plaintiff, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.
The newspaper said ``the records show that, in many
instances, lawyers for the tobacco industry edited the
scientists' letters before they were submitted for publication''
and that in some cases the law firms themselves wrote the
letters and paid the scientists to sign them.
The publications to which the letters were sent were mainly
scientific journals, although one was sent to the Wall Street
Journal which refused to print it, the report said.
