......Quite good!! Alasdair..... Sam Milham -- take note (pursuant
to a discussion you and I had in Long Beach!!)

Now, Alasdair -- I particularly like the way you differentiate between the
"direct current" (magnetic field) exposures that human kind has
experienced since the dawn of evolution ... and the "vibrating" (AC) kind
of exposures we are experiencing at an accelerating rate ("exploding")
today -- since the dawn of man-made electricity and radio, etc.....
That is to say ... within the last 100 years ... in particular within the
years since about the early 1960s......

My congratulations to all of you who are working on this historical
aspect!!!

P.P.S. !!! If I were in any way responsible, I would be ashamed of that
pitiful chapter in the recent NIEHS report (pp. 31-34), "How high are
exposures in the U.S. population." It took a couple of industry sources
and printed them as if they were science..... Both were done by the same
industry-sponsored person and both approached the problem as if a
time-weighted-average (of ELF) were all that was needed to understand the
Blue World.....

It is not that there is (so much) misinformation there..... It is that
the inclusion of the info that is there suggests to readers that we
(NIEHS, "science," whomever) are "on top" of this aspect of the problem
and know what is out there...... The truth is: We don't have a clue.....

Cheerio.....

Roy:
I am also most interested in what the levels were 100 years ago.
I would welcome comments/corrections on these figures:
These are what I have found so far:
                          over approx 30 - 300000 MHz
Average US   (EPA  1980)->  0.13V/m   0.00005W/m2  0.005uW/cm2
City Dweller (FCC  1999)-->  2 V/m    0.01 W/m2     1 uW/cm2

‘Natural’ background ‘noise’
     300 - 3000 MHz 0.002 V/m 0.00000001W/m2 0.000001uW/cm2

Typical maximum at ground near 15m base station
masts (can be much higher)900 &1800MHz 3V/m 0.027W/m2 2.7uW/cm2

The following is from the introduction to a book that I am writing:

It is quite surprising when we look back to see just how recently we
started to surround ourselves with these unnatural vibrations. Although
limited radio telegraphy had been around since the start of the century, it
wasn’t until 1920 that the Marconi Company began experimental transmitting
of speech from their Chelmsford U.K. factory on the very long wavelength of
2,750 metres (0.109 MHz).

It was 14th November 1922 when the BBC started broadcasting in London with
station “2LO” (1500 metres), to be joined the next day by “2ZY” in
Manchester and “5IT” in Birmingham. So, less than 80 years ago we were
surrounded by virtually no radio-frequency or microwave radiation. Much of
the United Kingdom still did not have an electricity supply, and in those
areas who did some were ‘direct current’ and did not vibrate many times
every second. The village in Cambridgeshire, where I live, did not receive
an electrcity supply until 1939.

The real growth of commercial radio broadcasting did not start until the
early 1930s. In December 1932 the ‘Wireless Constructor’ was reporting:
“Every week one reads of some station planning enormous power, some
fiddling little continental station will suddenly develop into an
overpowering giant.” and warns that unless people could screen out the
unwanted signals “you may find yourself in the position of a paralysed man
watching the rising of a tide which will ultimately drown him”.
......Prophetic words?

The large rise in young (<6 years of age) Acute Lyphoblastic Leukaemia
first appeared in the 1930's. It was either electricity (et al) or
internal combustion engine fumes, or both. It was pre artificial chemical
agriculture.

Good wishes
Alasdair

Dear Roy Beavers:
It is only a little while ago that I came across your list. It
is encouraging to see that there are people who dare to discuss the
implications of our man-made wireless and not-so-wireless world. I have a
genuine interest in the natural background noise before the advent of our
modern wireless world.
