Subject: No Need to Cook Up a Medical Scare

To All -
Below is a letter written in response to the 23 August TIME
"Business" section piece entitled "We're Already Living in Cell Hell," by
their Technology writer, Joshua Quittner.
We are asking that many more of you weigh in and send in a comment
on the status of research into the harmful biological effects of RFR as it
relates to cellular telephone use. The hope is that if TIME receives
several dozen letters on this subject they will run at least one of them in
a future "Letters" section. TIME goes to press on Friday, so see what you
can do by tomorrow afternoon.
        E-mail address is: Letters@time.com FAX is: (212)522-8949.

This is a key time to keep the subject in the popular press. More
will follow on up-coming congressional initiatives where we will also need
your help and input before Coongress reconvenes on September 8. Try to keep
in succinct. The letters TIME runs are never long.

                                        Janet Newton, Executive Officer
                                        EMR Network

Dear Editor:

Josh Quittner captured the frustration many of us experience when
someone else's "must have" is foisted on any and everyone around him who
chooses not to "have" it. Is it portentous that his commentary appears in
the same issue with the letter decrying the polluting of the Ganges by
industrialists who didn't consider the effect of their technology on the
population they seek to "develop?" Wireless telecommunications is another
technology that brings with it collateral damage. The "Vienna EMF
Resolution" from the October, 1998, University of Vienna Workshop on
possible biological and health effects of RF electromagnetic fields states
that: "The participants agreed that biological effects for low-intensity
(RF) exposures are scientifically established." The debate in the
scientific community is over what ARE the safe exposure limits to avoid
"cooking" the cell phone user and his neighbor. Technology is never
neutral. There is no need to "cook up" medical research on the harmful
effects of this one.

                                         Janet Newton
