Information on Mobile Phone Energy Emissions to be Made Available

The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) today announced that it had
reached agreement with industry to make information about the maximum emission
levels of mobile phones more readily available.

The agreement—reached between the ACA, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications
Association (AMTA) and industry representatives—will provide manufacturers with
a coordinated system for disclosing the maximum emission levels for all mobile
phones on the market. Consumers will now be able to verify that emission levels
fall below the levels set out in the ACA EMR Human Exposure Standard.

ACA's Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) Manager, Mr Ian Maclean, said both the
ACA and industry were aware that the community was looking for reassurance
about the possible adverse health effects associated with using mobile phones.

"This initiative should improve community confidence in the safety of mobile
phones because it will enable consumers to be better informed before they buy a
  phone."

Mr Maclean said that under the agreement, emission levels will be provided
voluntarily as part of the mobile phone packaging. AMTA is also investigating
setting up a database containing information on emissions.

"Industry will not be obliged to disclose this information, but the ACA
believes those who do will have an advantage, " he said.

The new system is being organised by AMTA on behalf of industry, and will be
monitored by the ACA to ensure that public information needs are adequately
  met.

The agreement to publish mobile phone emission levels furthers the Government's
commitment to industry self-regulation and follows similar arrangements being
implemented by the USA's Federal Communications Commission.
