This moratorium decision comes after many months of dedicated work by a few
citizens who want to protect their homes and communities from chronic
exposure to RF radiation from cell towers and antennas. Now the scene
shifts to working with the San Bernadino County Board of Supervisors to
prepare a protective wireless siting plan over the coming months. Good job!

County plans guidelines on wireless communication towers

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today (8-8-00) unanimously
approved a temporary prohibition on the construction of wireless
communication facilities until the county can establish some guidelines on
their placement and appearance.

Deregulation of the wireless communications industry has prompted a flood
of applications to the county for new cell phone towers. Recently, the
county has received 75 such applications from various communication
companies, officials with the county's Land Use Services Department said.

At the same time, county residents have expressed concern over where the
towers are placed and how they fit in with the surrounding environment.

The Board today directed county staff to draft an ordinance within 45 days
establishing some proposed guidelines. The Board would lift the moratorium
approved today when such an ordinance goes into effect.

The county will then develop a comprehensive set of guidelines governing
the placement of cell phone towers to replace the ordinance. Those
guidelines should be ready for Board consideration in four to five months.

The temporary prohibition approved today was originally proposed only for
the county's mountain communities. However, Board members decided to extend
it to cover all county unincorporated areas.
