Occupational Exposure to Electr= omagnetic Fields Linked to SuicideWESTPORT, Aug 17 (Reuters Health) - An association exists between occupat= ional exposure to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) a= nd suicide, especially among workers under 50 years old, according to the= results of a large epidemiologic study reported in the August issue of t= he Western Journal of Medicine.
Dr. David A. Savitz and colleagues, from the University of North Carolina= School of Public Health, in Chapel Hill, examined the incidence of suici= de among 138,905 male electrical utility workers. Workers included in th= e study were employed at any of five electric power companies for at leas= t six continuous months between January 1, 1950 and December 31, 1986. C= ase-control sampling included 536 deaths from suicide and 5,348 eligible = controls.
The researchers found that "suicide mortality was increased relative to w= ork in exposed jobs...Increased odds ratios (ORs) were found for years of= employment as an electrician (OR=3D 2.18) or line worker (OR=3D 1.59)." = However, the researchers noted a decreased OR of 0.67 for power plant op= erators.
"Men younger than 50 years with recent exposure above the median had nota= bly higher ORs: 2.39 for men younger than 35 years and 3.62 for men aged = 35 to 49," the authors report. This suggests that "younger people may be= more vulnerable to the effects of exposure to EMFs. A difference in the= nature of depression and suicide between age groups may account for this= increased vulnerability," the researchers propose.
Dr. Savitz's group notes that their study was limited by the inability to= obtain information on several important suicide risk factors, "such as h= istory of mental and addictive disorders and disrupted family environment= =2E"
This concern was echoed in an accompanying commentary by Corinne Peek-Asa= , of the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center at UCLA De= partment of Epidemiology, in Los Angeles, California.
"EMFs have been shown to decrease melatonin production. People who are d= epressed have below normal levels of melatonin, and depressive illness is= an important risk factor for suicide," Dr. Savitz told Reuters Health in= an interview.
"The results of our study should encourage more research on the relations= hips among EMF exposure, melatonin pathways and health problems," Dr. Sav= itz concluded.
