Also involved in this project (known as the Pontypool Project) are Chris Busby, a low lkevel radiation scientist, and Tamara Galonja, a microbiologist from NoviSad University, Yugoslavia, who is arriving at our lab. in January to do the cellular work. Basically the Pontypool Project is setting out to identify and support with experimental evidence the mechanism alluded to by Becker and Adey in the 1970s, but now refined by me to show that the cerebral rhythms during REM sleep mare specific instructional signals sent during optimal S-N conditions, and received by glycoproteins on plasma membrane surfaces foir inward signal transduction to DNA. This explicit mechanism is disrupted by exo-generated EMFs, particularly when modulated at near -brain frequencies. We have therefore uncovered a vital new and important mechanism of biological growth control, which at a stroke explains how artificial EMFs can interfere with cellular processes, and also explains many unsolved problems in biology. One important breakthrough in this mechanism is the recognition that it is the electric and not the magnetic component which is the active parameter, and one suspects that EPRI and the utilities generally have deliberately been funding magnertic field studies (in preference to electric field studies) in order to obfuscate this for many years. My lab.put paid to that when we published our epi study in 1996 (Europ. J. Cancer Prevention, June 1996) showing a clear dose response relationship between the electric field strength and childhood leukaemia incidence. This has now forced the UK CCR study to incorporate (begrudgingly) measurement of the ELF electric component in case and control homes. Whilst I freely acknowledge that I am standing on the shoulders of giants Becker and Adey, not to mention Szent Gyorgii and Frolich, and I acknowledge their contribution to my thinkiing, I also think my concept, and the structural support I have provided for it, is a genuine and important scientific advance, and will have enormous implications for the next century's biology.
