Hi everybody:
I believe that there is some scientific significance to the
message below, forwarded by Dr. Marjorie Lundquist. As she states
below, over the three years that I have known her, I can confirm that
she has indeed been trying to get the same message out for years.....
With one difference, however. Marjorie, you have always insisted that
it is ONLY the RF "riders" on the power lines that are responsible for
the bioeffects.... We have had no basis for saying that. We have had
(and still have) much less research that shows the RF effect ... than
the ELF effect. It seems to me that (based on research -- rather than
hypothesis) we still must allow for the probability that ALL frequencies
of electromagnetic activity (EMF/EMR) are/should be suspect!!! (As guru
wrote in "Inertia and Malfeasance" the latest essay on my web-site.)
Remember, "Mother Nature" does not know that 'man' has "defined" her
world of electromagnetic activity into small "bands" which we call the
wave-bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.
This is a good time for all of us to think again about how little we
really know on this subject -- beyond the fact that ELECTROMAGNETIC
ACTIVITY IS BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE!!! We do know that now!!!! That is
a new scientific paradigm, the full significance of which we are
***running away from***.
That biological activity is potentially harmful under parameters of
exposure which we do not yet understand and can not well define.....
Nevertheless -- our lack of "certainty" about the parameters of EMF
induced bio-activity should not be used as an excuse for doing nothing!!!
The epidemiological studies are showing us the tip of an iceberg as to
how harmful that bio-activity can be.... Remember -- those studies do
NOT well measure the ACTUAL risk factors ... because we are already
living in a world where the "unexposed" control groups are virtually
nonexistent!!! Consequently, the ACTUAL risk factors are likely higher
than we are finding in our studies....
The IDIOCY of our (mankind/our governments) behavior is the totally
THOUGHTLESS way in which we are diving head first into this world of
man-made EMF exposure that is growing exponentially -- a "Blue World" that
is ***thousands to millions*** of times "bluer" than the exposure mankind
was afforded the chance to adapt-to during the course of human
evolution....
What we are tolerating when we allow this incredible ***explosion*** of
EMF exposure to engulf the whole world, as it is doing in blind response
to the "profit motive," is insane!!! It is ***criminal negligence***
for our governments to pretend otherwise and blindly "look the other way."
The risk from EMF exposure (in all frequencies of the EMR wave-bands) is
***consciously*** being passed-on to the public ... rather than
faced-up-to as it should be by a responsible scientific/political system
(if we had such).....
If the public had the facts on this situation, the public would DEMAND
action...... No doubt that explains why the public is not being
informed..... That, too, is criminal negligence......

A pair of Italian scientists has published a paper titled "Radiofrequency
Exposure Near High-voltage Lines" in ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVES
105(Suppl. 6)(Dec. 1997) 1569-1573. The authors are Maurizio Vignati and Livio
Giuliani.
This paper publicly announces "the presence on an electric grid of
radiofrequency currents used for communications and remote control." They
report that "These currents have been detected on high- and medium-voltage
lines. In some cases they are even used on the main system for remote reading
of electric meters."
They then point out the obvious: "This implies that radiofrequency (RF)
magnetic fields are present near the electric network in addition to the 50/60
Hz fields."
So around many electric power lines, especially those of higher voltage, there
is likely to be an RF field as well as power-frequency fields present.
The Italian authors offer their own thoughts on the significance of the RF
field: "The intensity of these RF fields is low but the intensity of currents
induced in the human body by exposure to magnetic fields increases with
frequency. Because scientific research has not yet clarified whether the risk
is related to the value of magnetic induction or to the currents this kind of
exposure produces in the human body, it is reasonable to suggest that the
presence of the RF magnetic fields must be considered in the context of
epidemiological studies."
This is exactly what I have been saying about the health hazard from power line
EMFs for many months now, though in somewhat different words. These authors
have accomplished what I was unable to do, despite months of trying: they
managed to get their information pubished in the peer-reviewed scientific
literature!
One point of information may be pertinent. The Italian authors seem to think
that a radiofrequency electromagnetic field can be separated into independent
electric and magnetic fields, as can be done at extremely low frequencies (50/60
Hz). This is not true; such a separation is valid only at extremely low
frequencies. Therefore these authors should have spoken not of an RF magetic
field, but of an RF electromagnetic field. At radio frequencies, the electric
and magnetic fields are so closely coupled that they really cannot be considered
independently; where one is, the other is present also.
Apart from this one error, I endorse their paper and their conclusions and hope
others in the scientific community will take this paper very seriously indeed.
