The BBC is interviewing - perhaps some good coverage will come out of this, at the very least. Libby Kelley ASSEMBLY MEMBERS PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR NIFATT CAMPAIGN Following NIFATT’s delegation to Assembly Members at Stormont Thursday 3/12/98, Mr Jim Shannon, Ards Borough Council DUP Member and Member of the Assembly, pledged his full support for NIFATT’s campaign. Mr Shannon’s comments were echoed by the large number of Members and local Councillors from across the Province who attended the meeting. These included, Mr Oliver Gibson, the DUP Councillor from Omagh, who thanked all the representatives of NIFATT who made presentations for the information which had been provided, much of which Members had been hearing for the first time. Councillor Gibson requested NIFATT to issue information to all Assembly Members and local Councillors throughout the Province, particularly the scientific evidence which had been presented by Dr Roger Coghill. Mr Phil Willis, Liberal Democrat, MP for Harrogate and the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Northern Ireland also addressed the Assembly Members on behalf of NIFATT and informed them that he had put forward a motion the previous day to the House of Commons which sought changes to existing Planning legislation. Mr Alan Meyer, the senior partner of Halsey Meyer Higgins of Westminster addressed the Assembly Members on the European Treaty article 130r adopted by the British government and the precautionary approach contained therein with regard to the environment and the population residing within that environment. A spokesperson for NIFATT stated after the meeting that they were delighted with the response they had received from the Assembly Members and Councillors and was confident that their campaign, which has now the support of a number of groups, including MPs, Lawyers and eminent Scientists throughout the UK and Ireland, will succeed. The spokesperson went on to state that the forthcoming Judicial Review, which is being spearheaded by the Ballymacashen Road group from Killinchy and is scheduled to be held in the High Court in January 1999, will add weight to the campaign and, hopefully, put more pressure on the Government to take action in relation to the Planning regulations governing the erection of telecommunications masts.
