Beavers"To: emfguru -------------------------------------------------- Hi everybody: .......I have known (but the EMF-L group has not!) how hard Robert Bedard has been working to update and vastly improve the Archives!! I am forwarding the following to let you know the status -- nearly done!! And when it is done, we will ALL owe a great "bundle" of gratitute to Robert..... He also has one of the BEST internet websites on the EMF subject -- in my opinion..... I think we are extremely fortunate to be able to house our archives there on his site......!!!! Cheerio..... Roy Beavers (EMFguru) roy@emfguru.com .....It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness..... NEW!!! Website ...................People are more important than profits................. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 07:52:10 -0800 From: Robert Bedard To: rbeavers@mail.llion.org Subject: Archives status Roy: Well, Lord Gates giveth and Lord Gates taketh away ... last night I was doing some last minute checks before uploading the critical mass of core WaveGuide files which have been converted to the new format, (and the Archives), when I noticed a problem ... When I wrote the script to "sift" the messages into folders by month, I used a "shortcut". On UNIX systems there is a command to copy and delete a file called mv (move.) On NT, they like to think they are a UNIX variant (hah!) and so they ported a mv command to NT. This is what I used in the script to save a couple of steps. To make a long technical story short, the mv command RENAMED ALL THE FILES; it converted them to all lowercase letters. The index pages linking to the 3600 documents are all pointing to the original filenames with mixed case ... NT ignores case in this case (no pun intended), but the UNIX system hosting WaveGuide will not. The index pages will no longer work. Gates giveth and Gates taketh away ... Anyway, I should have this problem worked out today, and will either upload the changes today or possibly tonight or tomorrow morning. (Soon.) Sorry for the continued delays ... but I hope the wait will be worth it. I am very excited about the changes in WaveGuide ... the site design is more "polished", maybe appealing to the yuppie freaks that really need to hear the message ... I have incorporated a bunch of new material, and re-worked older materials. All previous versions of WaveGuide are now complete and in the Archives. Archiving the older versions allowed me to convert less material, but still have it available. It has been two years since I updated the Links Database. Once I get the basic pages up there, I need to go through and test the links; broken ones will be removed, and if I could enlist your help to solicit your list members for any IMPORTANT links that should be included, I would really appreciate it. (If you can help on this, I will send a solicitation notice you can forward.) As always, keep up the good work -- be "talking" to you soon -- rob't P.S. You might mention to anybody that you KNOW is working in the archives that over the next day or two, access could be sketchy ... thanks.
