.......I surmise that we have many (mostly) urban readers here on
EMF-L....  So ...  there may not be much appreciation for what Joanne
writes below about the deer she saw on Christmas day.....  But I 
appreciate......

When Joanne and her husband, Bud, visited us in our rural (two miles out
of town) Ozarks home last fall ... we talked about the many wild animals
that used to be regular visitors (sharing our home with us) 25 years ago
when we first moved in.....  No more.....  We, too, used to see many deer,
raccoons, wild turkeys, coyotes, etc.....  The wild pheasant used to use
our front shrubbery for shelter in the winter time.....   The deer would
(with our approval) jump the fence and eat our apples off the trees in
fall.....  No more.....

Our "private" spring-fed and stream-fed lake was then clean and full of
fish -- bass, crappy, catfish....  No more.....  It is has since become
virtually a cesspool ... the consequence of run-off from agricultural
chemicals (nitrogen) used to stimulate the growth of grass for fattening
the cattle that then grazed all around us....  No more.....  The cattle
are gone....  Only the nitrogen remains.....  And the lake now also
harbors billions of e-coli bacteria from cesspool "ground water"
filtration -- a result of the hundred or so new homes that have been built
in the valley, relying on septic-tanks rather than a sewage system.....

Once we were favored by the presence of hundreds of Canadian geese on our
"lake".....  Now they are rarely with us ... usually only after good
heavy rains have cleansed the lake....  They no longer hatch their young
in the cover along its banks ... which is being "clipped" down to make it
look like a golf course ... by our "nouvue rich" yuppy neighbors who
arrived with all the new development....

I value Joanne's note below about the deer....  So should we all....

I also would like to tell everyone that Bud and I went hiking with one of our 
sons in a large, wooded park near our home on Christmas Day.  Just as we 
rounded a curve in the trail, we saw the white tails of some deer.  The deer 
ran through a small patch of woods and ended up standing in the middle of the 
road in front of us.   They stood there looking at us and then a couple of 
fawns followed the other 6-7 deer into the pine trees on the other side of 
the road!!!
