In addition to the data you provide below, consider this: Those with
whom I have discussed this same aspect (from Sweden and Finland,
in particular) readily testify that the homes in Scandinavia are likely
**further away** from the power lines than is the case in the U.S. --
where we have been using a 35 foot separation (in urban areas) for
more than 50 years.... The Swedes and the Fins regard that distance as
"closer than we (THEY) normally build."

Some years ago -- via EMF-L (so it may be in archives somewhere) I asked
a researcher from Finland to tell me how many of the subjects in her study
were living within a 100 yards of the power lines she had studied....
"Nobody lives that close to the lines in Finland, she said....."
There you have it.....

Unfortunately. I am not aware of any studies that actually document this
aspect ... for comparison purposes..... (Joe Bowman may know if there
is anything on this?!?) The U.S. industry/government cabal has
scrupulously avoided such studies because they preferred to
measure magnetic fields and ignore the "closeness" issue which has been
sitting right there on their NOSES for a number of years......

The point further needs to be made that: "the closeness" issue has a
**direct bearing** on the possible validity of the Henshaw study which we
heard about last week!!! Further -- recall the way BOTH studies (the
NIEHS conclusions ... and the so-called NRC study of the National Academy
of Science "wrote" their conclusions..... They avoided any measurements
or "mG" conclusions -- but they agreed on the general proposition that
epidemiology studies showed 'PROXIMITY to power lines' to be a valid
association with a higher incidence of childhood leukemia......!!!!

Cheerio..... (Ed offers a very interesting idea below.....)

Hello Roy,

Your list service has had numerous recent comments addressing whether
the electric or magnetic component of electric power delivery is the most
hazardous.

There have also been comments about the 220 volt distribution system in
the U.K versus the 110 volt system in Canada and the USA. Most of
Europe's distribution systems have lower magnetic fields and higher
electric fields than here in North
America.

If cancer, childhood leukemia in particular, is being caused by the
electric component more than by the magnetic component might we not expect
to see a higher incidence of cancer in countries with high electric
fields? Likewise, if the magnetic component is the major contributor,
might we not expect to see a higher incidence in those countries
whose distribution systems produce high magnetic fields?

Maria Feychting and Anders Ahlbom in their 1992 study in Sweden found
one case of leukemia per 3,309 children studied.

The Leukemia Society of America (1-800-955-4572), this morning,
indicated that the National Cancer Institute estimate for new cases of
leukemia in 1999 was 3,100; 1,500 of these being Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukemia. The Fayettville Public Library found that there are 3,000,760
children in the USA today (thank you Kathy). Simple mathematics shows
that the estimated incidence of leukemia in the USA is one out of
968 children. The estimated incidence of ALL is one out of 2,000
children.

[......Good work, Ed!! Also, I believe the record shows that the **rate**
of childhood leukemia incidence in the U.S. is **rising** -- can you
confirm that, ED??.......guru......]

Sweden appears to be a much safer place to raise children.

Perhaps others on your list will provide similar leukemia figures from
their respective countries together with the types of distribution systems
in which they reside. Such numbers might help enlighten us as to whether
the electric or magnetic field component is the more hazardous.

Cordially,

Ed Maxey
