Hi everybody:

John Evans recently sent me the following. I have been slow to forward it
because I wanted time to add some comments.

The importance of this document (a propaganda piece put out by a power
company) is that it is so typical.... At this point in my EMF "career,"
I have seen perhaps five or six of these. They ar all the same.

What I really hate is that they are getting away with this sh....

a) because the typical homeowner or resident beside the power lines
does not have the info to "answer them."

b) as I say below, because the institutions (RICH government health
agencies) that should be looking out for the public's interest ...
have simply "taken a powder." They have ducked and are ducking their
responsibility.

I am in a particularly bad mood about the latter point at this moment ...
because about an hour ago I received a document from the NIEHS people
who are preparing that EMF RAPID report I have been telling you about --
and, based upon the sessions I attended, I had begun to expect some
honest results!!!

However, based upon the document I have just received and read ... We are
about to be lied to again!!! (With a government which has the 'top man'
dissembling ***and shaping his answers to 'fit' political needs, rather
than telling the truth*** perhaps one should not be surprised if we get
the same from the bureaucracy.....) That has become the pattern of
behavior in Washington these days. The "truth" is not important (even in
"science") ...

What is important is what you can get the public to believe. (That is a
paraphrase of a quote attributed to the Presidents adviser in the last
campaign.)

That means that control of the "Means of information" -- now controlled by
RICH special interests (the same crowd as all those big political
contributors we were hearing so much about last year) -- determines public
policy..... There is just not much of a "demand" (in Washington) for
"truth" anymore.......

Folks ... at this point ... all I'm going to say about this forthcoming
EMF RAPID report ... is: be prepared -- it looks like we are about to be
lied to again!!

In one of my recent messages, I said that if that happened, I would tell
you ... and ... I sure as hell will!!!!!!!!

Cheerio......

Dear Roy,

Greetings! It is some time since I have sent you anything. However, I am
reading all your forwarded e-mails. Keep that good stuff coming.

Stella and I were away on a cruise for about two and a half weeks, got the
'flu and have been lying low since. We do see the light at the end of the
tunnel, though.

A friend of mine who lives in Maine and winters in Florida sent me the
February, 1998, issue of the Florida Power and Light Company's "FLP Energy
News" featuring an article entitled, "A Few Words About EMF." Thought you
might like to see it, so I scanned it and am sending you and Cathy Bergman
the text.

Here it is:

**INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT COMPANY**
                                      [http:www.fpl.com]

A FEW WORDS ABOUT EMF

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are invisible energy fields that are
present wherever there is electricity. Power lines, electrical wiring,
appliances and computer terminals are common sources of EMF.

For about two decades, scientists have questioned whether these fields can
cause cancer. While some population studies found a statistical
association between exposure to magnetic fields and certain types of cancer
other studies found no such association.

["no such association".... its easy to produce that kind of a study!!!
Such "proof of the null hypothesis" studies are meaningless when you
have the number of positive studes that we now do have on childhood
leukemia and power lines proximity. Including the most recent NCI
(Linet Study) which also showed an association when properly analyzed
and presented to the public. Beyond that, the number of _valid_
scientifically accepted epidemiological studies is now such that _even the
"industry-friendly" NAS study_ concluded that the association between
"proximity" to power lines and childhood leukemia was a "robust"
reality... And the other cancer/EMF associations, like brain cancer and
breast cancer, have even higher odds ratios..... guru]

And no biological mechanism by which EMF could cause cancer has been
established.

["has 'not' been established" -- that's the kind of "dissembling" of the
truth Bill Clinton uses to earn his "slick willy" reputation......
The real issue is, of course, what evidence do we have and what is the
weight of that evidence telling us????? ... THERE ARE TOO MANY "SLICK"
LAWYERS AND "P.R." TYPES WHO HAVE BECOME THE VOICES THAT ARE TRANSLATING
THIS EMF/HEALTH HAZARD ISSUE TO THE PUBLIC. That has happened because the
"voices" of the U.S. science community -- who know better -- are
silent!!!!....... What does it tell you about the U.S. Science community
when you note: that in order to get the truth about this vital EMF/health
issue before the public ... we have to go all the way to NEW ZEALAND to
find a spokesman!!!!!!!!!! I am ashamed for the U.S. scientists.... guru]

A 1996 report by the National Research Council of the National Academy of
Sciences found no conclusive and consistent evidence that exposure to
residential electric and magnetic fields causes cancer.

[Again, the lawyers and "P.R." types are taking refuge in a dishonest
dissembling of the truth -- and a ***misrepresentation*** of what the NAS
study, in its totality, really found...... guru]

While there is no convincing evidence that EMF causes cancer, it also
cannot be conclusively proven that EMF does not. So the controversy
continues.

If you would like to learn more about EMF, or see what some suggest as
routine ways to reduce your exposure, there are several sources available.
Here are a few:

Call 1-800-DIAL-FPL, ext. 6262, for a free educational brochure called
"Your Guide to Understanding EMF:"

Call the national EMF "information line" at I -800-EMF-2383.

Call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 if you have questions
about cancer.

Visit your local library.

It would be interesting to get the FPL Company’s "Your Guide to
Understanding EMF."

And who supports and runs the national EMF "information line"?

Cheers,

John
