Hi everybody:

Some of you have already seen Alasdair's (of the U.K.) message below.
Most of the rest of you are not aware of the five or six earlier exchanges
that have taken place on this subject -- Dr. Kjell Hansson Mild's
retraction of some reports published in Europe.

I am sending this last "wrap-up" message to everybody because I think
this case illustrates a couple of things we need to be aware of:

1) The damaging consequences to study results, credibility, and public
acceptance of these studies that clearly are being done under the
auspices of the industries who stand to lose if "unfavorable" findings
result. (The public usually is not made aware of who is in control of
these studies. As this case has illustrated, it is control by the
industries who have a vested interest in the outcome.)

2) The really untenable position this puts the researchers into, when
they are dependent upon "industry" for their research funding.... As
I said in one of the messages that was an earlier part of this exchange,
I know Dr. Mild. I would be very surprised to learn (if that is the case)
that he changed his pronounced judgment under any kind of external
pressure. Still, this story is not a pretty one.......

Cheerio........

Dear All

Mild's study was first mentioned publicly in the report:
"Possible health effects related to the use of radiotelephones -
Proposals for a research programme by a European Commission Expert Group"

Published in October or November 1996 it was prepared by the "Expert Group"
between 4th January and 17th September 1996. This called for funding into
related (900 & 1800MHz) EMF bio-research totalling 24 million ECU.

The "Expert Group" was Chaired by Dr Alastair McKinlay, UK NRPB, and had
the following members:
Profs: Anderson (Denmark), Bernhardt (Germany), Grandolfo (Italy),
and Hossmann (Germany); Drs van Leeuwen (Netherlands), Mild (Sweden),
Swerdlow (UK) Verschaeve (Belgium) and Veyret (France).

I have heard that Carlo & Repacholi have now joined it. ??? .

Anyway, on pages 72-73 this report states:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
"In Sweden and Norway, epidemiological studies are now being carried out to
discover the prevalence of headaches and other subjective disorders among
radiotelephone users. This will be done by using a questionnaire study. As
a first estimate, about 5000 questionnaires will be sent out to each group,
ie anaolgue and GSM users. This will be followed by a case-control study
based on the outcome of the questionnaire, and which will include
assessments of SAR values and ELF magnetic fields from the different models
in questions. Thereby, it might be possible to find out what, if any,
parameter(s) are the ones of most interest for these disorders. The
case-control studies will also include psychosocial and stress factors as
possible risk indicators."

"The preliminary results from the questionnaire part of theses studies will
be ready in Spring 1997, and will give an indication of the prevalence of
these disorders. These results can then be used as guidance for the need
for an enlargement of the studies."
---------------------------------------------------------------------

When, in the summer of 1997 I tried to find out what was happening I was
told that Kjell Mild was in charge of this work. I then contacted him and
he told me that the work had been delayed, but that results should be
available in February 1998. I thought that he meant "available" for me
(etc) to see but I am now told that he only meant "available for the Expert
Group to see".

This they did in Oxford on 6th February 1998 at a meeting apparently
convened by a Trevor Hughes, a Professor Emeritus of Neuropathology at
Oxford University. I am told that he is retained as a paid Consultant of
both the Electricity Industry and the Cell-phone Industry!!!!!!!!!!

This meeting apparently pointed out "some important flaws/lacunae" in Mild's
work and sent him away to re-analyse it all.

I think Kjell Mild is caught between a hard place and a rocky shore. He
knows that there is a real problem with headaches and mental attention &
concentration deficit with extensive GSM phone use, but he obviously needs
ongoing funding and also for his work to get published.

In the meantime the European cell-phone industry is stating that they will
be going to CDMA (which doesn't pulse in the same way as GSM) for the next
generation of mobile telephony!!!! Their excuse is that it gives them
greater bandwidth (which is true, but.....). See my letter in the Nov/Dec
issue of Microwave News re TDMA/CDMA. I will email a copy later.
