Roy

Here is an update on the MAI situation in Australia. There has been
an enormous amount of media attention to this in the last few days -
with around 5 major newspapers carrying the story in their feature
pages.
I have been to two meetings recently that have had as the keynote
speaker a lecturer in law from a New Zealand called Jane Kelsey. She
is pretty much an international lobbyist in this issue now - and is
right across the ramifications of the treaty. According to her, the
Canadian and New Zealand Governments are the most active on it - in
Canada the Council of Canadians are totally opposed to it. Also one
of their State governments has a consensus for the fed govt not to
sign the treaty. There has been a great deal of debate in both these
countries. However the public are not so well informed. We hope to
change all that. A working group has convened in Melbourne by a
couple of NGOs which I will be attending. The actual MAI document is
available on the internet - it is 163 pages long! There was a copy
at the meeting the other night which I had a flick through, its
somewhat incomprehensible. She reccomend that we set up a 'select
committee' to scrutinise the document - and I am currently
organinsing this.
The possible ramifications of this treaty are manifold and worrying -
everyones conspiracy theories come true!
Thanks for sending it everywhere - we'll stay in touch.

Sarah
