It has been like this for ages (?always?) in Europe. There are some
quite high premiums charged when calling mobiles from a wired normal
phone. I refuse to call mobiles for that reason. British Telecom and
the cellular operators have recently been told to cut the charges to
more reasonable levels (some were in the order of $0.50 per minute!)
It is a clever way for the cellular operators to make lots of money
by unsuspecting callers paying these premiums.
