Yes, Cheryl, McCain was chairman of the senate committee that wrote
the infamous Telecom Act of 1969......

However, it was a bipartisan bill.  In fact, the main "handler" on the 
floor of the Senate for that bill was the Vice President -- Al Gore.
Gore was the one who put in the words which attempt to prevent local
siting decisions on the placement of cell towers....  He was told at
the time that it was unconstitutional, but he (and the industry)
figured that before it could be challenged in court ... industry
would be able to finish the job of building out all the cell towers....

Both Republicans and Democrats were falling all over themselves to do
what the telecom industry wanted.....!!!!  The actual "wording" of the
bill was largely written by industry lobbyists.....  Telecom industry
$$$$$$$ and lobbyists were all over the place.....!!!!!!!!!!

The "people" weren't there.....!!!!  (Except for two lone females who
were treated like dirt.....Cathy Bergman and Bert Dumpe.....)

McCain did learn MUCH from that experience, though.  When he talks about
the corruptive influence of $$$$$$ in Washington -- he refers mostly to
that bill and one other, the TAX bill, which both Republicans and
Democrats tried to outdo each other in giving big tax breaks to the
$$$$$$$$ big international industry crowd.....  Energy, pharmaceuticals,
banking, electronics, autos, etc....  That would move U.S. jobs
overseas..... With big tax breaks.....  (He is also very critical of the
ethanol bill, which heavily subsidizes U.S. agriculture -- actually, it
mostly subsidizes Archer-Daniels-Midland....!!!)

McCain has SEEN the corruption.....  And his "duty, honor country"
military code of life seems to be guiding him to do something about it.....
