Subject: Dangers of electromagnetic radiation (EMF)....

Dear editor: (Robert -- I know it is long. But we really NEED to
get this in front of the public, and with sufficient substantiation....)
The front page of your February 7th News Leader shows a photograph
of a pretty little girl about six years old. She is staring intently
into the screen of her computer monitor. Her nose and eyes are about
six inches from the screen of the monitor.
Perhaps that picture was posed for picture-taking purposes. Even so,
it is sending a dangerous message. That close to the screen, the child
is dangerously exposed to electromagnetic radiation, also known as EMF.
[I use a minimum of 36 inches and I off-set the screen so that my eyes
are not directly in front.]
Though our government is not doing a good job of educating the public
about the EMF subject, those of us who have been observing and
studying the effects of EMF upon human health for many years know that
the evidence is accumulating rapidly worldwide ... that EMF is having
serious health consequences upon the human population.
I quote Dr. Neil Cherry of New Zealand:
"There is strong evidence that extreme low frequency (ELF) and radio
frequency microwaves (RF/MW) are associated with accelerated aging
(enhanced cell death and cancer) and moods, depression, suicide, anger,
rage and violence, primarily through alteration of cellular calcium
ions and the melatonin/seratonin balance." (From Dr. Cherry's June
1998 report: Actual or potential effects of EMF and RF/MW radiation on
accelerating aging of human, animal or plant cells.)
Dr. Bruce Hocking of Australia has found a connection between childhood
leukemia and residence near TV antennas in Sydney.
In 1972, Drs. Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper found the same for children
living near power lines and other large electrical components in Denver,
Colorado. There are now about two dozen such studies worldwide. The most
recent are from Toronto and the U.K. They were produced after the NIEHS
study cited below.
Recently the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS)
in the U.S. has reported: "The strongest evidence for health effects
comes from associations observed in human populations with two forms of
cancer: childhood leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia in
occupationally exposed adults." (From: NIEHS Report on Health Effects
from Exposure to Power-Line Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields. p. 9.)
In the U.K., Dr. George Hyland has written that electromagnetic fields
(EMF) are not alien to life. Accordingly, any living organism is
vulnerable to interference by external EMF/EMR frequencies which are
close to frequencies of the organism itself. (Dec 1999, "Memo to
Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones." United Kingdom)
What Dr. Hyland and all the other research is saying is that EMF can
produce "biological effects" that are not much different than the kind of
biological activity that occurs in the case of chemical effects. These
effects have also been observed in some laboratory studies -- and at
levels of exposure so low they have astonished the research community.
Not all the "dots have been connected" yet. In particular, the parameters
of danger are not yet established -- though they are clearly much lower
than was originally assumed. Still, there is sufficient evidence to say
that human kind is dealing with an environmental hazard the likes of which
we have not yet faced.
EMF is ubiquitous. It is everywhere. Its effects are slow to manifest
themselves. And, of course, EMF is invisible ... has no odor or other
signature of its presence. Some of us who have been studying it for
years, call it the "Blue World." Invisible, yes, but if the EMF sources
were emitting a soft blue glow -- we would soon be aware that our
entire world is slowly becoming bluer and bluer...... And ... as it does
so, the biological effects (with the concomitant health damage) are
increasing....
Our government has clearly been stunned (or **frightened**) into silence
by what the research is showing on this subject. Incredulously, it also
has recently decided to stop further research??!!
That's 'madness,' of course. But it derives from the "fear" of finding
out more than "they" want to know. e.g., The vested interests (which
includes the government) don't WANT to know the rest. That state of
mind derives from two political facts that work against the formation
of good public policy:
(1) The government and the military are, themselves, in a serious
conflict of interest situation on this issue. The U.S. government is
one of the most prodigious propagators of EMF in the world, satellites,
military facilities and the like. "National security" is at stake,
they are likely to claim..... Whether or not that is so -- and whether
it justifies total disregard for the dangers now being discovered --
needs to be publicly debated in our democracy....
(2) The industries that have a vested interest in this issue
(electricity, telecom, radio and TV etc.) have political influence with
the White House, the congress and the bureaucracy which (for a time,
at least) has **blocked out** the public and the pursuit of good public
policy on behalf of ALL the citizens rather than just the vested
interests.....
Still, I feel obliged to warn the little girl in your picture -- and
anyone else who might be inclined to be careless with EMF (or cell phone
or power line) exposure -- to take precautions and provide yourself some
substantial distance of separation..... As much as you can, really. At
this time, that is the only defense we KNOW will work......
