......Thanks to Margaret for the following.... I (and no doubt most
of the readers on this list) continue to be very interested in the
progress of the Expert Group review....

The discussion of the telecom industry's insistence that Dr. Repacholi
be present ... should be noted by all for future reference....
(He doth protest his innocence too much....!!)

Cheerio....

Subject: Evidence to Expert Group - Meeting in Belfast.

Our meeting(s) in Belfast with the Independent Group (February 3rd & 4th)
went much better than we had expected. Approximately 70-80 people were
present at the public meeting and there was, shall we say, a frank exchange
of views!

I think we got a very fair hearing from the Group and they actually said
that the Belfast meeting was their most constructive and informative to
date. At the public meeting (February 3rd) many people told of the ill
health they have endured since the erection of masts near their homes.
People are suffering quite dreadfully. Members of the public from all
over Northern Ireland travelled to this meeting. Representatives from
Dublin, Waterford, Cavan, Wicklow and
Donegal were also present.

It became apparent that the Group is particularly interested in personal
case studies and anecdotal stories. It is imperative that as many as
possible write to tell their own story, whether it is on the planning
side i.e. lack of consultation, stress and worry at the thought of
possible adverse health effects and property devaluation, or those who
are suffering following the erection of a transmitter near their home or
their children's school. For those who have experienced the underhand
tactics of the industry in relation to planning, please, also put this in
writing. It is important that our elected representatives contact them
also. Contact address is: Sir William Stewart, FRS, FRSE - Tayside
University Hospitals, NHS Trust, Trust Headquarters, Ninewells Hospital
and Medical School, Dundee, DD1 9SY e-mail
address: ISAM@tuht.scot.nhs.uk

We made it clear that, had we known this, we could probably have arranged
in excess of 1000 responses from individuals. However, we had
concentrated our efforts specifically on obtaining scientific evidence -
together with information relating to the inadequacies in existing
Planning regulations (and how these inadequacies are exploited fully by
Telecommunications Companies).

NIFATT were the only organisation within Northern Ireland to submit
evidence to the Group in advance of their Belfast meeting. For that
reason, we were the sole party invited to speak with the Group at the
closed meeting on February 4th. Our delegation on that date comprised:
Alan Meyer (Solicitor), John Roydes, Dr Hilary Kennedy (Chair NIFATT) and
myself.

We proposed several recommendations regarding phones and masts.
It was interesting that Dr Mike Repacholi stated, during this closed
meeting, that the ear and the hand should be exempt from SARs!.

It is our firm belief that the Industry would only sanction the creation
of this Expert Group if Dr Repacholi was a member. We made it clear that
we were not happy with the participation of NRPB representatives and Dr
Repacholi on the panel - but, as they were present, it was difficult to
elaborate. In order to clarify our feelings on this subject, Alan Meyer
has since written to the Chairman (Sir William Stewart) on our behalf,
thanking him for the "fair hearing" - but reiterating our unease with
the presence of these individuals in the Group.

Sir William has assured us that his report to Government (due to be
completed in April) will "not be mealy mouthed". However, he is unable to
guarantee that the Government, having had sight of the Report, will
either publish or act upon it.

Please see the Independent Expert Group Website for further details @
www.iegmp.org.uk.

If you require sight of the latest Brussels Statement issued on the
2/02/00 relating to the Commissions adoption of the use of the
Precautionary Principle IP/00/96 please contact us and we will forward to
you - it is especially relevant to the telecommunications issue.

It is also worth mentioning that a couple of people at the public meeting
stated that they had placed tinfoil on their windows and the tinfoil
subsequently showed either burn holes or pin holes - I haven't tried this
yet! - but perhaps a few of you may like to particpate in this experiment -
should the tinfoil show any 'adverse effects' you could also forward this as
evidence to the expert group?

For those who have been successful in your own campaigns to keep masts away
from your areas - please don't forget - your stories are also relevant.

We are updating our mailing list, and would be obliged if you would forward
this message on to others who may find it useful - also please advise if you
require your name to be removed for this list.

Kind regards
