Beavers" Subject: RE: Computer screens (Cvijovic).. Dear Roy, I don't know if the discomforts related to computer use I have experienced are similar to those referred to by Drasko Cvijovic (he just says he "hurts"). But in my experience a couple years ago, a notebook computer with LCD also triggered my discomfort (temple pressure headache, jangled nerves, and more) the same as working with a desktop computer with CRT display system did. Nowadays, I am able to use my "desktop" computer on a daily basis without fear of my old symptoms by using a remote console with LCD. The computer is connected to an analog LCD display, keyboard and mouse by 30-foot cables. This way I can keep the computer at a safer distance from where I sit, and I get the benefit of a low-EM radiation LCD. I also went through a period of at least 6 months during which I drastically cut back on all computer use before I came up with this solution. So I don't actually know whether I would have recovered my health with this setup. I just know it works for me now. I do feel strongly that greatly reduced EM radiation exposure for the 6 months gave my body time to do its recovery work. In order to accomplish that, I needed the cooperation of my management at work who agreed to my ideas about changing my work routine to spend less time in the office and working with computers. But why would a notebook with LCD trigger symptoms in an sensitive individual? We know that LCDs emit very little EM radiation by comparison to CRTs. But what about the rest of the computer? Laptops and notebooks are generally designed to consume less power than desktop machines, and may radiate less EMR given identical display systems (seems logical, but I'm just guessing). Another difference is that portables don't have a power supply built into the device - they use batteries and AC adapters. I think (but am no expert) that this avoids a source of ELF (extremely low frequency) radiation that is present in desktop computers. But when you use a desktop machine you have only the keyboard directly under your fingers, not the whole computer as is the case with a notebook or laptop computer. And with a portable computer, you might also have the device sitting on your lap! It seems possible that when using a notebook computer, the very close physical proximity to the user's body could result in a higher EMR exposure than when using a regular PC located some distance from the body (considering just the processor box, not the display system). This leads me to some questions. The EM radiation given off by personal computers (say with LCD display only) must have quite a different spectrum from the devices currently being investigated as health hazards, which primarily are wireless communications devices. But does anyone have a feel for whether the emission levels from CRT-less computers are in any way comparable in strength, even if at different frequencies, to the levels discussed as being thresholds for concern about hazards to human health? Also, are portable laptop/notebook computers tested for compliance to FCC guidelines for electromagnetic radiation in a way that reflects the way they are typically used, as opposed to the way desktop systems are configured and used? -Allan -----Original Message----- From: Roy L. So I borrowed a laptop as I have been advised that LCD screens are better - there was also a List message recently, from a satisfied LCD screen user. But I have realized it is not harmless - maybe it hurts, say, twice less... I would like to share information with other (Electrosensitive) people who have some experience or knowledge about LCD screens. Also, I would be happy to know whether anybody have tried using the video beam instead of a screen.
