Beavers" Subject: Victory in San Francisco? Dear Roy: The latest antenna struggle here in San Francisco appears to be headed toward a neighborhood victory. As you may recall, Sprint wanted to install nine antennas on Church of the First Covenant in the shape of the cross. After hearing from neighbors at a meeting Sprint was forced to conduct according to San Francisco zoning laws, the church board announced they would try to break their signed contract with Sprint. According to church leaders, Sprint never disclosed to the church that there was any possibility of health hazards from microwave radiation nor that Sprint planned to construct the antennas on the front of the church in the form of a cross. We haven't heard a direct response from Sprint. At the community meeting, however, the Sprint representative, Tony Lello from Chicago, stated to one of the organizers that only thirty people showed up at the meeting and only five or so were outspoken. In his opinion, given the lack of community response, Sprint would not back out of the contract and even if they did, he vowed that Sprint would seek another site no further away than a block and a half. In terms of neighborhood response, Mr. Lello previously had first mailed meeting notices with the wrong address for the meeting then corrected the address in a second mailing. (Sounds like he's qualified to work for the U.S. census). This meant that neighbors had less than the legislated period of time to plan for the meeting. In addition, here in San Francisco, according to City law, only homeowners need be advised that antennas are to be constructed near them. Renters who make up more than half the population need not be informed. As a final note, in the original meeting, I personally got in a shouting match with an engineer from Hammett and Edison who attempted to use the Sutton Caulfield antenna study to illustrate that microwave radiation is perfectly safe. I'm not proud of my shouting, but I am proud that I stood up to the same company that has constructed the illegal antennas on Sutro Tower. And I was thrilled that I was able to hand out Dr. John Goldsmith's "End of Innocence" commentary to support my position. Dr. Goldsmith, I felt your hand on my shoulder as I spoke. I hope I did okay. In this connection, the engineer mentioned a study of the central television antenna in Moscow that exonerated microwave radiation as a health risk. Anyone with information on this antenna? More soon on this breaking story... Christopher Beaver Archive provided courtesy of WaveGuide, http://www.wave-guide.org Reprinted with permission of Roy Beavers, http://www.emfguru.com
