Hi everybody:

One of our readers (a housewife in Minnesota) has been conducting an
interesting experiment.

Because of her suspicions that her children's illnesses were implicated
with the power lines near her home, she has (for about a year) been
observing and recording (CBC tests, etc., conducted by her veterinarian)
the effects upon guinea pigs -- that she has placed in the same location
where her children used to sleep!! Against the "power wall" as she
calls it.

It is -- you might say -- an updated version of the "canary in the mine."

Because her vet has been doing the actual scientific "monitoring" of
her work (including the lab work), it may gain a credibility that is
worthy of a "write-up" in one of our EMF periodicals?! And perhaps
some other legitimate scientific follow-up..... It is (apparently)
NOT VERY EXPENSIVE to do.....!! (Take note FDA, EPA, NIEHS, NIH and
other of America's RICH health bureaucracie$$$$$$!!! They don't even
THINK about projects unless they have been funded by multi-million $$$$
authorizations.)

ALSO -- IT IS SOMETHING YOU (EMF-L readers) TOO, COULD DO in
situations where you are concerned about possible EMF effects!!!!!

I forward Joanne Mueller's most recent report, below......
(I would think that she might also be considered to be an "expert"
witness in power line court cases....??)

Subject: Lymphocytes, more tests.....

Hi Roy and All: We just had the fourth round of CBC's (complete blood
counts) on two of our guinea pigs. For the sake of brevity, I will use
"Z-3" and "Z-4" to identify the respective guinea pigs and tests.

Z-4 - After one completely normal CBC and one that indicated only a
"slight reversal" (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio), the CBC (complete
blood count) on 11-8-00 for this guinea pig, yielded results of
neutropenia and lymphocytosis. Neutrophils were only 7% and lymphocytes
were very high at 89%. At the time, she checked out o.k. but the vet
was able to hear what she described as "some crackling sounds (breathing)."

Z-4 was fed SMZ-TMP (sulfa) twice a day through 11-27-00 and her cage
remained on the powerwall. After hearing what sounded like an occasional
choking-type cough, Z-4 was taken off the powerwall and moved to a
basement cage on 12-16-00.

A checkup on Z-4 on 1-31-01 indicated worsening of the crackling
respiratory sounds. SMZ-TMP was again prescribed with the thought she
may have developed pneumonia. Previous medication was last given on
11-27-00.

The very surprised vet called on 2-2-01 to say she couldn't believe the
results for Z-4. Her overall WBC (white blood count) on 11-8-00 had been
13,000-15,000 but now, the white blood count is down to only 8,000, which
is normal. Currently, lymphocytes are 59% and neutrophils are 37%, showing
an improvement there but not normal results. In other words, Z-4's
physical condition is declining BUT the blood test results have improved.
I doubt "improvement is from the sulfa due to the extended time since last
dose (11-27-00).

When the vet mentioned possible pneumonia the day before, she did state
"well, you have the powerwall situation too......" These test results
are not indicative of infectious results that the vet was expecting!!!!
Improvement from the move away from the powerwall? Probably, BUT I
think she will most likely die from a heart problem as did my Z-2 because
the damage was already done by the time she was moved on December 16.

Now for the results on testing of Z-3. She is the one with only a
slightly elevated WBC at time of testing on 11-8-00 but with
"hypersegmented neutrophils" (33% of neutrophils were hypersegmented).
On 11-8-00, Z-3 checked out fine with no unusual breath sounds and/or
coughing, etc. The vet did not prescribe sulfa but I requested it and
administered it until 11-27-00.

Z-3 continued to show no signs of deterioration and she was moved on
12-16-00, along with Z-4, to the basement cage where they both joined Z-1,
who continues to be in good health with normal CBC testing since she
recovered from hypersegmented neutrophils and later, severe osteomyelitis
in one leg.

Z-2 was the one who died from "proliferative epicarditis" last spring.

The vet was equally surprised at time of phone call on 2-2-01, that Z-3,
who appeared to be absolutely fine at time of checkup on 1-31-01, now has
neutropenia and lymphocytosis!!!! Her lymphocyte count is 91% and her
neutrophils are only 6%. The vet also said the test revealed "one toxic
neutrophil." The lab report identifies this neutrophil as being "blue,
foamy cytoplasm with ropey nucleus and while it did not completely lite
a toxic segmented neutrophil, it was abnormal looking."

Z-3's overall WBC (white blood count) is only 5,000 at this time. The
vet didn't really know what to say except that the "toxic/unusual
segmented neutrophil" was indicative of her "coming in contact with
something and her voice drifted off.......

I requested and picked up SMZ-TMP for Z-3 but am curently withholding it.
I am contemplating taking her to the University of Minnesota for further
testing if she doesn't develop the choking-type cough (not sure meds will
help anyway since vet didn't actually prescribe until I asked for same).
I need some time to be able to afford additional testing at this time.

I mentioned to the vet that I know "hypersegmented neutrophils" mean
"slowed DNA synthesis" and that the neutrophils are produced in the bone marrow.
I originally thought the slowing down meant production of
immature neutrophils.

The vet said, "no, it means the bone marrow is not kicking out more
neutrophils." She indicated that even mature neutrophils can become
hypersegmented and that means that the neutrophils are remaining in the
circulation and not going to the tissues like they are meant to do. In
other words, the neutrophils aren't doing what nature intended when they
become hypersegmented.

The results of testing on my guinea pigs are consistent with elevated
lymphocytes and low levels of neutrophils cited in Dr. Duane Dahlberg's
"The Effects of Ground Currents on Dairy Cows," published in "The Bovine
Practitioner" in September 1994.

Take care everyone!!! Joanne Mueller, Minneapolis, Minnesota
