In addition, several articles on the general subject of interference by passenger consumer electronic devices on airplanes have been printed in IEEE Spectrum. I would like to add, however, that while there are potentialities for interference of cell phones with NAV/COM gear, another factor is the fact that the transmission from altitude would probably swamp the ground based systems, because the signal would be received in more than one cell simultaneously. Another factor, of course, is that the airlines provide commercial air telephone systems and wouldn't want competition with these. -- ---- Bill P. Curry, Ph.D. |Physics is fun.
