Subject: Provincetown, MA, meeting

In response to the request for information about speakers at the meeting in Provincetown, MA, someone wrote that John Osepchuk had worked for a utility. That is news to me; he worked for Raytheon, a defense contractor that developed microwave technology for the military, and that decided -- as World War II drew to a close -- to create a commercial market for microwave ovens. That way, the company could continue to enjoy a financial return on its investment in microwave technology for many decades after the war was over.
Of course, to be successful at this, it was necessary to ensure that the public was not afraid of microwaves. Osepchuk has always been in the forefront of the "microwaves have never killed anyone; compliance with the IEEE/ANSI standard will protect human health" brigade.
Guess what? I have been doing a search of the literature, and have just found a paper published in the 1950s in which animals were irradiated in the laboratory with microwave radiation at a power density of 0.1 mW/sq. cm (which is 1/100th of the current IEEE/ANSI exposure standard for human beings). Some of the animals died, while others showed a wide variety of abnormalities. Those who attend the meeting might want to ask Osepchuk about the results reported in this paper. - Marjorie
