Hi everybody:

Tom O'Hare's message below is typical of some others I have received
in recent months -- where the metrics of the RF/MW scenario are being
confused with the (mG) metric of the ELF scenario.....

He needs help on that ... and more. Would one of you pick up and
start the education process here, please? I am kind of busy these
days......

Will keep the mail flowing, though....

Cheerio....(Tom, you have come to the right place.)

Dear Mr. Beavers:

I ran across some material which you had written about a conference
concerning EMF material. And, since you call yourself, the EMF Guru, I
thought that I could address my questions to you. My e-mail address is
tohare@midwestern.edu =20

Basically, my problem with EMF relates to my consideration of possibly
purchasing a home in the Chicagoland area. It is located about 2 to 2 =BD
blocks from three AM radio towers. The strength of the station is 50,000
watts, and it broadcasts at 1000 MHz. Two of the towers are operating
during the day, and only one at night. I have been unable to find any data
on any of the EMF sites concerning AM radio towers, so I cannot evaluate th=
e
magnitude, if any, of any health risk. =20

As a result of the above problem, I had EMF and ELF measurements taken both
inside the home and outside. I do not have the official report yet, but am
aware of some of the outside readings. What concerned me was the EMF
readings around the home. The back yard showed an EMF reading of 3
milligauss (this faces the radio towers). The front yard showed a reading
of 1.75 milligauss. The two side yards showed readings of about 1.25 to 1.=
5
milligauss. I do not have the inhouse readings, but expect them to be
variable because of the appliances, etc. =20

My take on the limited information which I have been able to gather is that
the radio towers are probably not contributing to the measurements around m=
y
house as far as the EMF readings. There are no overhead power lines in thi=
s
area, but there are electrical lines that are buried. I believe that the 3
milligauss reading in the back yard is probably because of a buried power
line.

I have been told that the acceptable ambient EMF readings are below 2
milligauss, though I have seen recommendations of 1 milligauss. As I am
sure you are aware, the literature becomes somewhat confusing concerning
EMF.

I would be interested in your opinions concerning the following:

1. Is there any reason I should be concerned about possible detrimental
health effects of the three AM radio towers near this home?

2. Are the EMF readings around this home something I should be concerned
about, and if so why?

3. Any other information/opinions you can provide me concerning this matte=
r
would be most appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

Thomas H. O'Hare
