Sprint is applying for a variance to construct an l55' wireless tower atop one of our ridges-zoned residential. The owner of the property stands to make lots of money by leasing 55 acres (my backyard) to Sprint for 50 years. Our neighborhood, surrounding neighborhoods and the rest of the town have been alerted and we have begun mobilizing but we need hard cold facts to fight this mega company. There is fighting already going on in town regarding the constuction of towers in residential areas for two way radio for the police. Our zoning board has been flip flopping about that! Sprints proposal is not for the police-wrong part of town to solve that problem. What can we do that has proven successful to win over our zoning board? We are prepared to secure an attorney if needed. Sprint goes to the zoning board meeting this Wed(Feb 2nd) and many of us will be there. We are preparing petitions, contacting media, environmental groups, etc. What else do you suggest? About 50 people met this morning and it was determined that we will fight on these grounds: 1. the land use is zoned residential, 2.we have a scenic vista restriction,3. we have height restrictions,4. health concerns(are there enough facts?)5.natural resources-endangered Bard Owl for example,6. may decrease property values. Is this enough? We cannot imagine what Sprint will say to the zoning board and town council to sway them-we cannot imagine any other benefit to town except for better cell phone reception and 911(we do fine with Bell Atlantic and others). We'll see on Wed what they say. We are worried about the future of this site-when present technology is obsolete what other hazardous and ugly techno-crap will mar the beauty of the beautiful town?
