Website ...................People are more important than profits................. 08:43 PM ET 12/01/99 Clinton Enters Fray Over WTO Talks By ANNE GEARAN= Associated Press Writer= SEATTLE (AP) _ America is far better off because of its trade ties overseas, President Clinton said Wednesday, defending his administration's position in the face of violent street demonstrations that disrupted a global conference. ``Today we have about 4 percent of the world's people,'' Clinton said in remarks to Washington state farmers, who benefit from freer markets for their apples and other produce. ``We enjoy about 22 percent of the world's income. It is pretty much elemental math that we can't continue to do that unless we sell something to the other 96 percent.'' Clinton toured the mighty port of Seattle, which accounts for much of the city's $34 billion in annual exports _ the most of any American city. Later, Clinton took his pitch for a new round of global trade talks to trade ministers from 135 nations, pressing the theme that the World Trade Organization needs to listen to legitimate voices of protest. The president also met with labor and environmental leaders, including some participants in peaceful protests against U.S. and international trade policies. Clinton said such peaceful demonstrations, which Seattle authorities were expecting, are ``in the best American tradition.'' But speaking of those who broke windows and clashed with police, Clinton was blunt. ``I condemn them,'' he said. Police fired tear gas at protesters for a second day Wednesday, and arrested scores of people. Snipers in camouflage rode the elevators in Clinton's hotel Wednesday morning, swinging their rifles aside to make room for stunned hotel guests. White House officials blamed a minority of lawbreakers for the problems and said Clinton's visit to the WTO gathering would not be affected. Clinton made the extraordinary situation the centerpiece of his first remarks after arriving in the city before dawn Wednesday. ``I want to say just a few words about all the rather interesting hoopla that's been going on here,'' Clinton said. ``We need to start and ask ourselves some basic questions: Do you believe that on balance, over the last 50 years, the United States has benefited from world trade? I do.'' _________________________________________________________________ Guru says: In the last paragraph, Bill Clinton utters one of his **typical** 'dodge the real question' and answer with a bland truism -- just as he did throughout the Monica Lewinsky affair..... Remember: "that depends on what you say 'is' ... 'is'....." Of course!! The U.S. and the whole world have benefited from world trade over the past fifty years!! No-one is denying that!! Including the demonstrators in Seattle..... Trade is desirable!! That is a given -- a truism..... BUT IT IS NOT THE SINE QUA NON OF **ALL** VALUES..... That is the matter that is being challenged in Seattle.... The fact that "trade is desirable" does not justify the "exchanges" -- the trade-offs -- that are NOW being demanded by the WTO in pursuit of trade policies which place the BIG $$$$$$$ global-industry's **profits** at the top of ALL priorities -- to the exclusion of all else!!! ..... Including such things as the preservation of national soveriegnty, local control of decisions that affect "our" lives directly, the environment, local jobs and wages, EMF safety, etc..... Slick Willie KNOWS DAMN WELL that the formulation I have just given above is THE issue..... He simply can't (is not capable) of getting off of his 'Monica Lewinsky' style answers....... Thirty years of "politics" has set some hard and fast habits..... They are the only 'kind' of answers the liar is capable of!!!! We just cannot get him out of Washington fast enough....!! And "Apoligizer Al" is a most **unpromising** replacement...... He has the same habits..... As do MANY others in Washington..... In BOTH parties.... Bill Bradley and John McCain seem to be the only 'tell it straight' choices we have at this time..... Let's hope we get a chance at one of those choices...... * * * P.S. I ask the press to do a little basic research and find out the story of "the beginnings" of the WTO..... You will find that it is the result of an 'unholy' alliance between liberal (?) Bill Clinton and the global $$$$$$$ industries very early in Clinton's first campaign......
