DO YOU KNOW OF OTHERS WHO SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST??? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 16:34:06 -0500 From: "by way of JNewton at EMRNetwork " To: rbeavers@llion.org, Subject: letter to the editor Greg Turner, Editor, Concord Journal Dear Greg On Sunday January 30, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alcott School, 91 Laurel Street, Concord, an educational program, open to the public and free of charge, will be held, entitled, "Microwaving Communities: The Link Between Cell Phone Antennas and Your Health." A panel of presenters and concerned scientists, will discuss the health issues and the ethics related to placing PCS microwave antennas close to schools, residences, businesses and where people congregate. The timeliness and local relevance of this issue pertains to a February 4, 2000, meeting of the members of the Trinitarian Congregational Church at 54 Walden Street, to decide whether to allow the continuation of an April 1997, contract with Sprint Spectrum to house an array of cell phone antennas in their steeple. (This site is out of compliance with the current Concord Town Bylaw voted on at Town Meeting in April,1998.) This church, my beloved church, sits in the middle of three nursery schools, a residential neighborhood, very close to many businesses, and in the heart of town. We offer this forum to the church community as well as to the community at large to allow all of those potentially affected by the microwave emissions from the antennas in the steeple, a larger understanding of the issue. It is the usual custom for churches to conduct their business in the privacy of their houses of worship. However, when a decision is made which directly affects the community at large, without the communities informed consent, it ceases to be just church business. I'd like to end my letter with a quote from Dr. Helen Caldicott, an internationally acclaimed physician and cofounder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a group which received the Nobel Peace Prize. She is by training a pediatrician and has worked as an instructor in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. "Radiofrequencies emitted from mobile telephone towers will have deleterious medical effects to people within the near vicinity according to a large body of scientific literature. Babies and children will be particularly sensitive to the mutagenic and carcinogenic effects of the radiofrequency radiation."
