Subject: Carlo's response to credibility issue (Whitehead). That is untrue. We know enough to be concerned, plain and simple." That is certainly true about the industry's strategy and it seems to work sometimes. They seem to be working especially hard to discredit Dr. Carlo. As mentioned by Jesse Berst, Editorial Director of ZDNet AnchorDesk in a recent e-mail from Dawn Hill to you, no one knows if cell phones cause cancer or any other health problem. The reason, it seems to me, is that the industry doesn't want anyone to know. There is no dispute either by independent researchers or those of the telecommunications industry that radiation can present a health problem. The only controversy is over the exact amount of radiation that causes harm. Since this amount varies with time as well as from species to species and even from person to person, the industry has thus far been able to make the issue seem confused and uncertain and simply address the problem by calling for more research. So far they have managed to ward off regulation much the same way the tobacco industry did in the early days of that research. There is really no excuse for the government not to control this industry and set standards well on the safe side for phones and towers both until more exacting studies have been completed, particularly concerning long term effects. Maybe if everyone bombarded their representatives with their concerns, we could eventually get them to act.
