Subject: Re EMF-L (H) leukemia study in Taiwan Date: Sat, 19 Jul 1997 004039 -0500 (CDT) From: "T. H. Chen" <bochenth@ccvax.sinica.edu.tw> To: Multiple recipients of list <emf-l@mail.llion.org> -------------------------------------------------- Dear Peter Grainer The article is not in English. In the next day (July 17th), the United Daily News gave more numbers. It was based on a talk Dr. Lin gave at a symposium. Dr. lin gathered the data from files on leukemia death in the Ministry of Health. He found out that children under 14 who lived within 100 m of power lines had higher rates of leukemia ( 2.58 times vs. control). It was not a large scale survey, focused only on residents near Taipei. He also pointed out that he found out employees of local power company and telephone company had higher death rates from brain cancer or leukemia, based on data from Labor Insurance Bureau (no actual number given). Here is Dr. Lin's address: Prof. R.-S. Lin Institute of Public Health Medical School, National Taiwan University 1, Sec. 1, Jen-Ai Rd. Taipei, Taiwan 100 The government owned power company gave a comment on Dr. Lin's talk. They claimed that the avarage magnetic field strengh in the vicinity of their power lines does not exceed 200 mG, well below the 1000 mG standard of IRPA. Apparently they were not aware of the NCI study. Tsung-Hsien Chen >Dear Tsung-Hsien Chen > >Your recent e-mail to emf-l is very interesting.
