.......A 'robust' "Well Done" to Libby (Kelley) and her colleagues
in San Francisco (and around the country!) for the progress they are
making as reported below........I continue to believe that ANY activity
which forces the EMF issue into the public view -- "shining the light" --
is worthwhile......This project is especially so, because of the
qualifications and reputation of the speaker, Dr. John Goldsmith, formerly
of California, now located at Ben-Gurion University in Israel.....guru...

Dr. John Goldsmith presentation 24, roundtable discussion 4:306:30
INTERNATIONAL LONGSHORE & WAREHOUSE UNION HALL,

Dr. John Goldsmith, professor of Epidemiology and Health Services
Evaluation at Ben-Gurion University in Israel will be the featured speaker
at a public forum on the effects of non-ionizing radiation on health and
the environment. He will address the growing citizen concerns related to
the proliferation of wireless digital telephony and TV broadcast towers.
A monumental local example, which concerns San Francisco residents and
workers, is Sutro Tower, long recognized as a potentially hazardous
facility on Twin Peaks. The tower is about 1,000 feet tall, supports over
50 antennas, with a combined radiated power of 15 million watts. A new
digital TV broadcast antenna is being added and is scheduled to start
transmitting by November, 1998. The new antenna will radiate 5 million
watts of power. Plans are going forward, despite many health and safety
warnings and strong local opposition. For example, as recently as June,
1998, a National Institute of Health scientific review panel passed a
resolution defining electro-magnetic fields as a possible human carcinogen
Dr. Goldsmith has authored more than 125 published articles and served for
more than twenty years (1957-1979) as chief of air quality research for
the State of California. After comprehensively evaluating the available
scientific literature, Dr. Goldsmith concludes:
The notion that non-ionizing radiation [from cellophane and television
transmitting antennas] was harmlessthe assumption of innocence is no longer
tenable....These findings suggest that radiofrequency exposures are
potentially carcinogenic and have other health effects. Therefore,
prudent avoidance of unneeded exposures is recommended as a precautionary
measure.
Dr. Goldsmiths appearance in the United States is another step in getting
information out, in a responsible, credible manner, to the general public. It
is widely apparent the telecommunications industry is financing an
international public relations campaign. Amidst all this marketing din, the
general public and all levels of government, from the

White House to Town Hall, are being misled about the relative health and
safety of the newly emerging wireless digital technologies.
As expressed by the Denver Business Journal:
[the industry] committed $25 million for a five-year research effort in
exchange for not being regulated....Four years into the work, the industrys
Wireless Telecommuni-cation Research program hasnt produced large-scale
research.
Libby Kelley, executive director of the Ad Hoc Association of Parties
Concerned About FCCs Radio Frequency Health & Safety Rules, says that her
group decided to sponsor Dr. Goldsmiths appearance because there are more
than 100,000 new cellphone and digital television facilities planned
nationwide over the next five years. These will carry several hundred
thousand RF emitting antennas.
Kelley states, It is crucial that, before wireless digital technology
becomes too entrenched, the public be fully and honestly informed. We are
calling for an independent analysis of the health effects of these new
technologies.
On May 22, 1998 the Ad Hoc Association filed a legal brief in the U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit, challenging the Federal Communication
Commission wireless facility radio frequency radiation guidelines on the
basis that as they fail to adequately protect public health and safety.
Among the issues raised in the appeal is the charge that the FCC has
violated the 10th and the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Joining
with the Ad Hoc in its filing is the Communications Workers of America's
national organization in Washington D.C.
The End of Innocence public forum with John Goldsmith will be held on Sunday,
August 23, 1998 at the Longshore and Warehouse Union Hall at 4 Berry Street
where 2nd Street meets San Francisco Bay. Dr. Goldmiths
Presentation runs from 24 with a public roundtable to be held from 4:306:30.
Admission free, donations requested. Another Dr. Goldsmith presentation
Friday, August 21 at Rainbow Grocery from 3:304:30. Admission Free.
