Hello Roy,

I have noted with interest the continuing debate over the possible
beneficial uses of various devices to reduce or prevent biological damage
from EMFs.

Chris's email raises the use of the Techno AO which claims, I understand,
to work by superimposing a small ELF field over the ELFs given off by a
mobile phone. This field is apparently white noise.

I would like to draw your readers' attention to the phenomenon of
stochastic resonance. This is the process by which very small signals may
experience increased detection when white noise is present. All that is
required is a non-linear detection system.

The human body is rife with non-linear detection systems. In fact, there
is not one linear system in the entire biology, however many systems are
modelled as if they were linear.

The serious implication for the operation of such a device which introduces
white noise into the environment of a person who is already absorbing RF or
ELF energy is that, almost certainly, some frequencies will have their
absorption (or detection) enhanced.

Thus, a device which introduces random, stochastic noise, of an ELF nature,
may indeed be amplifying the detection of some of the very fields it is
trying to swamp.

The study of stochastic resonance in biological systems is in its infancy,
however a number of research groups world wide are now investigating this
phenomena. Stochastic resonance is, however, well known in electrical
engineering circles, and has been for decades.

It would appear naive to believe that simply introducing white noise ELF
signals would in fact swamp or confuse a biological detection system and in
this way alleviate or negate the possible negative biological effects.

This whole debate is best considered as one which urgently requires serious
research into both the effects of ELF EMFs and the possible ways of
negating any observed negative biological effects. While industry is
continuing to deny any possible harmful effects, and funding agencies are
being persuaded not to fund bioelectromagnetic research, we will forever
swim in the darkness of this imposed ignorance. Spin doctors continue to
weave their magic over an unsuspecting public while those captains of
industry capable of sponsoring serious research continue to bury their
heads in the sand like frightened ostriches.

While this state of imposed ignorance prevails, we will see snake oil
salesmen ripping off the unsuspecting public, aided, as always, by the
power of the placebo. Their proliferation is as alarming as the increase
in electronic smog in our environment. Remember, the only requirement for
evil to prevail is that good people shall do nothing.

Bruce Rapley.
