Don:

.....I, too have difficulty with ANY approach that purports to
ADD EMF in order to deal with the problem (including the so-called
cancelling out of the power line EMF fields with parallel "out of phase"
current)...... It seems to me that what is actually being done is a
cancellation of the "magnetic field" while perhaps doubling the electrical
component.....

We also see below, that the same techno-hype story about
the computer EMF fields was printed in Australia.....

Subject: Discussion invited on the following article

Hi Roy

Its good to have you back! The following article appeared last week in the
local Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) newspaper and I would like to invite
some discussion on it. It would appear to me that there could be some
difficulties in using a device that sends out a counter frequency to negate
computer EM fields. With the advant of new technology todays office EM
environment is increasingly becoming more complex. Does the addition of
still more the right approach?

With computer VDUs will the introduction of the new generation plasma
screens (LCDs) eliminate the emission problem that we now have with CRTs?

Does anybody have the contact details for the researchers?

Regards

Don Maisch

New device helps counter hi-tech office blues

MAGNETIC fields from computers are making people working in modern offices
ill, researchers say.

More than a third of "sick building syndrome" symptoms reported by office
staff are caused by low-frequency electromagnetic from computer monitors,
they say.

The symptoms included headaches, fatigue, back and neck pain, depression
and irritability, and dry, itchy eyes.

In any four working weeks 50% of staff experienced between seven and 12
such symptoms, said the British researchers, headed by Professor Derek
Clement-Croome from Reading University and environmental consultant John
Jukes.

The scientists tested a new oscillation device designed to counter the
effects of radiation from visual display terminals.

They found that when the device was operating people's symptoms were
reduced between 27 and 44%.

Symptoms were assessed before and after fitting either the real device or a
dummy to VDUs. Neither staff working in the office nor the study team knew
in advance which of the devices was real.

The researchers were surprised to find that the magnetic fields appeared to
produce physical symptoms such as back and neck ache and pains in the limbs.

Although the problems were not severe enough to cause absence from work,
they affected personal well-being and productivity.

Mr. Jukes said: "So common is the pattern that most people tend to regard
it as just part of life. They may complain about the air conditioning, the
lighting, or their desk and chair but, since no one knows quite what to do,
the problem remains."

The researchers said the Tecno AO device had a "significant beneficial
effect" on the health and well-being of office staff working with VDUs.

They are now applying for funding for a larger-scale study into ways of
reducing environmental stress in offices. PA
