Unfortunately there are many uncalibrated devices out there especially the ones of the "first" generation. A specific value of milli-Gauss or better micro-Gauss would put this in the appropriate prospective. However proper shielding of magnetic fields is quite difficult the best advice is to move the work space to a safer less "radiated" position right away, and possibly use this space for the least frequently used tasks - if at all.
