Subject: Cell-phone radiation / "Kassensturz" update

Hi:

In a follow-up to their Kuster article of 1997, the Swiss "Kassensturz"
consumer magazine mentions the radiation values of 4 new cell-phone models
that were tested recently by the German consumer magazine "Eco-Test":

        Siemens C 25 0.719 W/kg
        Motorola CD 930 0.704 W/kg
        Nokia 6150 0.691 W/kg
        Ericsson SH 888 0.424 W/kg

An excerpt from the article "Cell-phones still give heat":

"What many people don't know in the debate over cell-phone towers is that
using a cell-phone exposes you to a 1000-fold higher radiation dose than
standing under a cell-phone tower. [Few people use their cell-phone 24/7,
though..--CR]
The health hazards of this radiation are controversial, but most scientists
agree that more research is needed. [sounds familiar?]
What's sure so far is that the radiation causes body tissues in brain and
eyes to warm up. Even studies funded by the telecom industry show that
cell phones can cause DNA damage in humans. Impressive are also the
research results of Australian scientists: Radiation similar to that from
cell-phones caused cancer and altered brain functions in rats and mice.
Still, the cell-phone manufacturers don't give a damn about health risks.
Radiation values are still a taboo. The industry stays silent, even when
asked. The manufacturers prefer to talk about booming sales increases.
3000 new cell-phones are sold in Switzerland each day. Meanwhile, 2 million
cell-phones are in use in this country. [7 million inhabitants]

Producing lower-emission cell-phones would be no problem

But it wouldn't even be hard to produce low-radiation cell-phones. Special
alloys would be enough to better shield the user's head against radiation.
And the costs wouldn't be substantially higher than for conventional
cell-phones."

Ever heard of such alloys ? Is this last paragraph correct ??

Cheerio,
Chris
