Some well written letters to Congress and to DOE to encourage continuation of programs now almost shut down will go a long way towards encouraging the kind of outcome you seem to seek<<<< Bertha Dumpe wrote: Janie: Sorry. We're at the point with this EMR fiasco where victims will take no prisoners. EMR has been investigated since at least WW II when radar was discoveredc to guide in military planes. Again revisited when personnel in the US Embassy in Moscow was irradiated with microwaves. ANSI standard came out of that. But industry saw the use of microwaves as a lucrative venture. Since at least 1975 scientists have been saying microwaves are safe, we don't know the mechanism by which they cause bio-effects. In 1986 and again in 1990, EPA declared EMR a positive Class B Carcinogen. Then they claimed to have lost [changed] their minds and rescinded the statement. DOE, which is in charge of ionizing radiation, has been designated as the primary agency to investigate EMR. To date, all researchers funded were industry bought, and concluded "the literature is 'inconclusive'; we need more funds to study the problem." Last year, probably influenced by tobacco litigation that shows industry knew tobacco was carcinogenic but promoted it anyway so industry would fluorish, DOE decided to pull EMR funding. I know the person who heads DOE funding. We've met and discussed this very issue. He said, that researchers generally stop short of declaring EMR carcinogenic so that research will not be cut. But guess what? It has been cut to a dribble. Even if researchers dug into this 1000 years, they would still conclude "the literature is inconclusive," The time has come, and Congress recognizes, that it must step in to protect citizens. The silly Telecom Act of 1996 actually helped citizens, though it was for the benefit of industry. Right now Congress is holding 2 hearings on it. One on high phone rates and lack of competition that the Act was supposed to miraculously create, and the other on health issues. This is the forum that we need; not more research. ALL THE RESEARCH HAS BEEN DONE THAT PROVES EMR IS A CARCINOGEN!! What the general public now needs is to be protected from it, while industry is somehow [restrained]. Guru says: I waited for others to respond to Janie -- thinking perhaps some of you would want to address the issue she raises -- without my input.... Only Bertha did. Thanks, Bert, for your viewpoint.... One sure way for one to engratiate himself with the scientific community is to advocate the need for more research funding. So, here goes, "yes," guru says: "ABSOLUTELY, more research funding is needed for EMF research......." As Bertha points out above, the case that EMR (perhaps at ALL frequencies) is biologically active (potentially carcinogenic, cancer promoting or otherwise health damaging -- subject to exposure parameters we now do not well understand, but which certainly are occurring in our home and working environments) has largely been "proved" to the unbiased (read: non-industry) observor..... BUT: Guru would NOT EVER AGAIN be supportive of the kind of "cozy" government/industry/scientists EMF research program we have seen in the U.S. over the past decade or so -- particularly including the EMF RAPID program!!!!!! In fact, I go so far as to say that it would be a big mistake just to throw research money at the problem via ANY of the present existing RICH government regulators or health bureaucracies!!! Every single one of them has far too much existing complicity and conflict of interest with the "bought and paid for by the BIG money contributors" of the present U.S. political system that has enabled the vested interests -- rather than the public interest -- to dominate this EMF research process....... Specifically, the likes of: EPA or FDA or FCC which have all spent the last six years of the Clinton Administration trying to "hide" from the problem by each pointing their finger at the other and saying "It's not my job, it's THAT agency's job...." ...or.... America's other RICH health bureaucracies (NIH, NIEHS, NCI, etc.) and EMF research community (DOE) -- which have ALL simply failed the "integrity" test of truthful reporting to the public (the biggest vested interest of all! ... But the only vested interest that is not represented in these activities) ... research findings which, with greater force and clarity, increasingly are going against the vested interests of the politically powerful electric and telecommunications industries AND the military!!!!! I have listed the examples of distorted reporting by the "scientists" many times on these pages. Shirley Linde did a good job, also, in her statement which previously appeared on these pages.... I'm not going to list them again here now. You all know the chronical well, starting with the prostitution of the EPA study in the Bush administration ... and continuing through the "burial" of the NCRP draft study ... right on up to the perversion of the data in the NCI study recently..... ....And I will not be told by the science community, "Oh, we didn't do those things ... they were done by the 'spin-doctors' -- the press release and press conference guys who presented those results to the public...." Most everyone who is reading these pages KNOWS that the science community ALLOWED those spin doctor perversions to occur ... by REMAINING SILENT, not correcting the record, or -- worse -- in some cases, by PROMOTING misunderstanding through complicity (even if it meant "shading" the results of their own research to calm the concerns of industry)..... Why would "science" do this???? Because it meant that the docile and "cooperative" researchers would continue to be able to obtain research funding from that "cozy" government/industry research program. Now, Janie tells us, "stop beating up on the scientists" and write your congressman or the Department of Energy (God help us ... if DOE continues to play a key role in managing the research!!!) to mobilize an effort for the renewal of the EMF funding which is about to expire..... Honestly, Janie, (not ranting, just asking) why should we (the public "victims") -- who have been repeatedly "screwed" over the last decade or so by "slanted" research and "slanted reports" on this issue -- suddenly now become letter writers and "lobbyists" to out congressmen for the need for more EMF research funding ... if it is to be controlled and conducted by the same "cozy" crowd that has screwed us for at least the past decade????.... While they repeatedly failed to report (or misled) the public about the real effects of EMF upon human health..... I do recognize that there is (for the whole world -- not just the U.S.) a very great need, indeed, for follow-on research to be urgently and generously funded..... But I hereby condition any support I may give on two preconditions: (1) The science community must NOW, honestly and totally, TELL THE PUBLIC what has already been learned.... It is not a "black and white" picture, I know. It is truly shades of gray ... but NOT the reassuring shades of gray that "science" (and your industry partners) have been paternalistically "feeding" to the public......... (2) Future funding must be provided and managed in such a way that NONE of the vested industry or government corporations or agencies will be involved in any way!!!!...... To me that calls for a completely new structure to manage the EMF research -- one that is in now way tied to the failed "cozy" crowd of the past...... Cheerio..... Guru P.S. Folks you might be interested to know that there are some congressional offices and people on this list... Here is your chance to TALK TO THEM!!!!
