........Yes, if sanity is not pursued by SOME responsible institution
that has the power to make a difference ... the wireless "blue world" now
**exploding** in our midst ... will prove to be far more sinister, more
unhealthy and more hurtful than the world Rachel Carson discovered......

That "responsible" and "sane" institution is not likely to be the
"democrat" government of the U.S. -- owned by the BIG spenders......

Will that "sane" institution be the European Parliament?.......

If not, the Blue World of "Lucent technologies," such as described below,
is likely to govern our future ... and we will have NO VOTE in the
matter.... Not a voice..... We are not "at the table"....... And
neither is any other "voice" of the public......

Lucent Technologies Announces Converter to Easily Link Data Equipment to its
WaveLAN Wireless Local Area Network

If it's equipped for Ethernet, it's Now Ready to go Wireless

MURRAY HILL, N.J., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today
announced the WaveLAN(R) Ethernet Converter that makes networked printers,
desktop computers and point of sale (POS) terminals as portable as cell
phones. The device is a "plug and play" add-on to any standard network
socket.

This Bell Labs innovation makes it possible for a business to, in effect,
build its own wireless network to connect a range of installed office,
business and industrial devices such as printers, point-of-sale terminals,
UNIX machines, copiers or scanners.

The converter, about the size of a paperback novel, enables any of these
devices to communicate to a high-speed WaveLAN wireless network consisting of
any combination of handheld wireless terminals, laptop computers, desktop
computers and networked access points linked to corporate networks or the
Internet.

"The Ethernet Converter is exactly what we needed," said Mark Payne, network
administrator at Worthington Steel. "We use it to connect our remote printers
to our WAN network. We don't have the expense or labor of running cable. We
roll the printer to where it is needed, turn it on and it's ready to print.
Worthington Steel has an industrial environment not conducive to radio, but
the WaveLAN Ethernet Converter works like a champ."

With the use of the WaveLAN Ethernet Converter, warehouse managers will be
able to relocate scanners to outlying freight areas. Retailers will be able
to move point of sale terminals and cash registers wherever they are required
for sales and special events. Printers will no longer be limited to locations
with network cable access, enabling them to be moved to high-use areas as
needed.

There are two versions of the WaveLAN Ethernet connectivity device. The
WaveLAN/EC is for Ethernet (10BaseT) devices and the WaveLAN/EC-S is for
devices with either or both an Ethernet (10BaseT) or a serial (RS-232)
interface. The WaveLAN/EC-S Ethernet Converter provides an Ethernet
connection and an RS-232 serial connection. This makes it possible to connect
older equipment that previously could not be networked, to be connected to a
wireless network via the RS-232. Because no special drivers are required,
adding the WLAN functionality will not require changing or altering the
application software of the host system.

Both WaveLAN Ethernet Converters use a PC Card architecture that enables users
to pick a variety of WaveLAN radios to use with their system. Current options
include WaveLAN/IEEE, WaveLAN/IEEE Silver with WEP security, and support for
the new high speed WaveLAN/IEEE Turbo will be available late April 1999. MRP
(Manufacturer's Reference Price) for the Ethernet/EC is $295. MRP for the
WaveLAN/EC-S is $395. The Ethernet Converter will be available from Lucent
VARs and sales channels April 1999.
