.......Everybody: Notice that in its brochure (below), Florida Light
and Power relies on the **usual** "nothing conclusive" has been proved
formulation..... ALWAYS ask them: based on "the weight of the evidence"
now available ... would you agree to live and raise YOUR children in the
shadow of the power lines????? That gets them away from the "nothing
conclusive" cop-out.....

Dear Roy,

A friend of mine who winters in Florida sent me a copy of the FPL Energy
News for February 1999. Below is a scanned version of one of their
articles. You will see that there are cracks beginning to show in their
armour. A year or two ago I sent you an earlier article by the FPL Company.

EMF: An Overview

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are invisible energy fields that are
present wherever there is electricity. Power lines, electrical wiring,
appliances and computer terminals are common sources of EMF.

For about two decades, scientists have questioned whether these fields can
cause cancer. While some population studies found a statistical association
between exposure to magnetic fields and certain types of cancer, other
studies have not. And no biological mechanism has been established by
which EMF could cause cancer.

A 1996 report by the National Research Council of the National Academy of
Sciences found no conclusive or consistent evidence that exposure to
residential electric and magnetic fields causes cancer. 0n the other hand,
in 1998 a working group of the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences issued a report classifying EMF as a possible human carcinogen.
Thus, the uncertainty and controversy continues.

If you would like to learn more about EMF, or see what some suggest as
routine ways to reduce your exposure, there are several sources available.
Here are a few:

Call 1-800-DIAL-FPL, ext. 6262, for a free educational brochure called
"Your Guide to Understanding EMF."

Visit the national EMF information Web site at www.niehs.nih.gov/emfrapid.

Call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 if you have questions
about cancer.

Visit your local library.

THE ABOVE INFORMATION WAS SCANNED FROM PAGE 2 OF A BROCHURE PUT OUT BY THE
FLORIDA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY, FEBRUARY 1999, ENTITLED "FPL ENERGY NEWS."
