Dear EMF-L gang,

Some of you might be interested in a free document I found as distributed
by the Province of Quebec. It is entitled "Artificial Tanning in Quebec:
Review of Knowledge, and Recommendations." You can find the Abstract at
this site: . Find the
above title on what comes up on your screen, and click on it. It is in
English or French, whichever you prefer. You can then click on the Free
Download Icon, and the complete document will download onto your workstation.

The complete document, if you wish to download it, is in ".PDF" format;
that means you have to have a copy of Acrobat Reader on your computer. If
you do not have Acrobat Reader, you can download a free copy from:

If you wish, by sending $5.00 to the address shown below, they will send
you a hard copy by regular mail.

Artificial Tanning in Québec

Review of knowledge, and recommendations

This report was prepared by the Joint Committee on Exposure to Ultraviolet
Rays and Artificial Tanning, composed of physicians and other scientists of
the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and its health network,
the Association of Dermathologists of Québec and the Association of
Ophthalmologists of Québec. It was tabled in June 1998 with Minister of
Health and Social Services Jean Rochon.

The Committee concluded, on the one hand, that there are no health
benefits, only risks, with artificial tanning, particularly because of the
clearly established mutagenic and carcinogenic properties of UVA and UVB
ultraviolet rays and, on the other, that the public is not well informed
about the risks of tanning. The scientific data analysed suggest that
exposure to ultraviolet rays has detrimental effects on health, such as a
greater risk of skin cancers, including melanoma, and premature aging of
the skin.

Only the summary report is presented on the Internet, without the 13
appendices of the complete printed version. An English version of the
report, entitled Artificial Tanning in Québec -Review of knowledge, and
recommendations, is also available. The complete report may be obtained
upon request and upon payment of a service charge [or downloaded in ".PDF"

*******************end of edited Abstract****************

It is of particular interest to me that the researchers have found that
exposure to UVA and UVB radiation can affect the immune system. [One of
the reasons we should NOT use regular, unshielded fluorescent lights]. It
is my opinion that one's immune system is also affected negatively by other
EMF radiation frequencies [sunlight is part of the overall electromagnetic
spectrum]. As some of you know, I contracted melanoma a number of years
after having been exposed to military radar during World War II in the
RCAF; and, I am now receiving compensation from Veterans Affairs Canada.

Here is part of what the Quebec researchers say in the full document: "It
has been demonstrated in in vivo and in vitro studies that UVA and UVB rays
alter the morphology and the function of Langerhans cells, suppress the
hypersensitivity of contact and promote the release of immunosuppressors
(CSA, 1989). Ultraviolet rays therefore induce local and systemic
immunosuppression. An experimental study showed that humans exposed to the
sun for one hour a day on 12 consecutive days had a reduced immune response
with high levels of T lymphocyte suppressors (Hersey, 1983). Similar
results have been observed in experimental studies on animals and humans
irradiated under sunlamps (CSA, 1989; Rivers, 1989). The effects of
ultraviolet rays on the immune system can promote the development of skin
cancer and other types of cancer or infectious diseases by inducing a
general state of immunosuppression."

I feel that one of the mechanisms we should be studying more is the
negative effect that EMFs have on the immune system.

Someday, we might be able to show the world just how dangerous our Blue
World is.

Take care, all. I've got some personal fighting to do right now.

Cheers,

John
