Carmel, Israel is deemed "safe" http://www.jpost.com/Editions/2000/03/16/News/News.4124.html News Article Thursday, March 16 2000 11:45 9 Adar II 5760 Itzik: Usfiya cellphone antennas passed radiation test By Liat Collins (March 16) - Environment Ministry tests for radiation on cellphone transmitting antennas in Usfiya have not shown any deviation from the permitted international standard, according to Minister Dalia Itzik. However, Itzik said she would convene on Sunday the special ministerial committee which deals with the cellphone antennas and invite the Usfiya mayor to discuss events there. On Tuesday, 18 people were injured, including 10 police officers, when local residents rioted over the number of cellphone antennas in their town, which they claim are leading to increasing numbers of cancer cases. The Health Ministry is responsible for examining the possibility of increased sickness, but the Environment Ministry is responsible for setting the acceptable radiation levels. Itzik said yesterday that there is a ruling that no cellphone transmitters should be erected without a building permit and these permits are not granted if the transmitters are not safe. "If there are antennas which have been put up without building permits, it is the mayor's job to ensure they are taken down," Itzik said. She also said that people "have to realize there is no such things as mobile phones without transmitting antennas." Comprehensive tests were carried out by the ministry's radiation unit at 1,000 sites in Usfiya last August in the presence of local council representatives. There were no deviations above the permitted international standard set by the World Health Organization (400 microwatt per square centimeter). In most cases the measured radiation was within 1 percent of the maximum limit allowed. In six cases, the measured radiation came within 2%-3% of the permissible standard. Ministry officials yesterday noted that in addition to cellphone transmitting antennas, there are large number of pirate antennas in Usfiya as well and antennas erected by the IDF and police. The tests were carried out on the pirate antennas too. Usfiya's high position on Mount Carmel has made it an attractive spot for siting antennas. ##### Libby Kelley Executive Director Council on Wireless Technology Impacts aka ~ Ad Hoc Association of Parties Concerned about the FCC's Radiofrequency Radiation Health and Safety Rules ____________________________ Website: http://www.ccwti.org Phone - 415-892-1863 Fax - 415-892-3108 Address: 936-B Seventh Street, # 206 Novato, California 94945 Archive provided courtesy of WaveGuide, http://www.wave-guide.org Reprinted with permission of Roy Beavers, http://www.emfguru.com
