Our Auckland study showed a threefold increased risk for adult asthma in 50-Hz magnetic fields above 5mG. This association was obtained after many known possible confounders were controlled for statistically. In the light of Henshaw's work at Bristol, I now think that the agent may well have been the electric field rather than the magnetic field measured in our study, however the two are highly correlated in houses where extremely-high-voltage powerline fields are the main source of exposure.
