>Why did the industries take these measures if they deny that
>there is such a thing as an EMF hazard?????????

Dear Roy,

There was no denial by Sunbeam. They fixed the problem.

"In answer to your question regarding the method used to obtain
the substantial magnetic field reduction, we have incorporated a
magnetic flux cancellation technique by virtue of insuring that
equal and opposite alternating current flows simultaneously in
closely spaced conductors which form the entire length of flexible
heating element within the warming blanket. To our knowledge, no
competitive bedcovering product embodies this technique to reduce
magnetic field."
(quotation taken from July 19, 1991, letter written by Leon
      M. Roszyk, P.E., retired head of Research and Engineering
      departments of Sunbeam Northern Company)

When aware of hazards buyers will, if options exist, purchase safe
appliances. The Sunbeam blanket has a drawing of a dove and the
words "Low E.M.F." It empowers the buyer with regard to
protecting both his/herself and the children.

Leon Roszyk succinctly tells us how electric currents may safely
flow in close proximity to our bodies. Most homemakers who read
this will quickly grasp the idea - equal and opposite current in
closely spaced conductors generate almost no magnetic field!

Many homemakers will quickly understand that utilities blanket our
nation with high EMFs just as blankets did individuals before
1991. This is because utilities do not run equal and opposite
currents in closely spaced conductors. In fact WYE distribution
systems run unbalanced currents in all sorts of metal pipes and
metallic sheaths of communications cables. The remedy is the same
as it was for blankets.

Users of electric power, unlike those of appliances, have only two
options. One is accept what the electric utility provides.
Property owners almost always have utility easements and electric
utilities have little or no concern with regard to equal and
opposite current along such easements. Today's legal climate
offers little if any foreseeable relief from the resulting EMF
hazard.

The other option is to purchase a generator and produce power on
the property. This option is rarely economically feasible.

What then is to be done? Teach. When the electric blanket lesson
is grasped by enough people we as a society will no longer
tolerate the invisible invasion of our homes and businesses by
EMFs from obstinate electric utilities.

And the consuming populace now has a powerful weapon. Email. The
INTERNET. It is a weapon over which big business and powerful
lobbies have no control. If emailing beat the MAI boys is it not
possible that the old guard of hazardous electric power can also
be brought to task?

Regards,

Ed
