Dear Roy,
I have just received a fax with the press release of the report, in
norwegian.
The heading says: "Norwegian-Swedish investigation does not support a
hypothesis that GSM mobile telephones give more health trouble than
NMT900 telephones"
 - then the text gives a reasonably good review. (would you like me to
translate it all?)

You asked who has paid for it - this is included in the press release:

 - norwegian part had Gunnhild Oftedal as project leader, from SINTEF
Unimed (now working at the Institute of Physics, Norwegian Technical
Natural science University)
 - swedish part had doc. Kjell Hansson Mild, Arbetslivsinstitutet, Umeå
Sweden (the geographical position is an assumption from my side; as far
as I know this, like SINTEF is a cooperation between university and
industry, located within the university environment)

The project was financed by: NHO (Norwegian Industries organisation,
also the counterpart of labour organisations), Telenor (the norwegian
main telecompany, only demonopolized this january) and Post - og
teletilsynet (the norwegian Post Office and telecommunications,
state-owned). In Sweden something called "Mobil Tele Leverantörerna"
supported the research - this would probably mean something like an
organisation of the different mobile phone operators on the swedish
market.

I would like to be able to say that of course here in Scandinavia we are
always objective and don't look at the money :-)(... - but perhaps
the way to look at it is that the question that was researched isn't
really the central and relevant question (by which I mean comparing GSM
with NMT, instead of with non-mobile-phone-users)! - but I don't agree
with you Roy in your first point, I am glad that they didn't only look
at cancer. Before cancer develops there will always be other symptoms,
so I find it a good sign that they looked at these more ordinary,
everyday complaints, and allowed it to be subjective. That gives a
better view on the first effects it has on the health of the user.

One interesting conclusion seems to be the difference found between
norwegian and swedish users, with the norwegians reporting more health
problems than the swedish. On a general basis norwegians are much more
fit than swedes, and generally less ill, - but we here in Norway live in
a much more electrified country. In Sweden for instance heating is
mainly by waterfilled radiators, whereas Norway is almost exclusively by
direct electricity. - I haven't had time to read the detail of the
report, since they have included the amount of total time-use - is there
a difference between the two countries there?

(just to add, I am swedish of origin, leaving the country soon after I
was 20, now living since twenty years in Norway after ten years in
England - so my background is explained)

with warm greetings,
Ingrid High

Hi everybody:

After receiving the Mild study (which has been forwarded to you),
I asked Alasdair to give me his reaction to the study. In what follows,
I'd say that he did even better than his usual good job.....

May I make two points about the study. (1) Keep in mind that this
study
is looking at 'symptomatic' conditions, headaches, etc. It may or it
may
not have any relevance to the more serious conditions like lymphomas,
cancer, etc.

(2) Also, all of the information collected -- which one might observe
is
of a highly 'subjective' nature in the first place -- is provided by the
mobile phone users, themselves, without benefit of any "interview"
process
which would normally be expected to better "standardize" the data for
comparison purposes. (Of course that would have substantially increased
the cost as well. I am not criticizing the study for this....)

I do not know who paid for the study. I suspect it was the phone
companies??? Nevertheless, the most intriguing aspect of Alasdair's
excellent commentary below is probably his reference to additional
results
"not yet published." It is for that reason that I decided to forward
ALL of the study and ALL of Alasdair's commentary ... unedited.....

Also, Alasdair has provided a real service by "cleaning up" the tables
below.....

Cheerio......

Roy,
Thanks for the invitation to comment on the Mild study. I have
re-formatted the tables to be suitable for e-mail and include these
